I was really interested by this book and was curious how biker gangs was going to be involved in a magical world.
But, I still don't understand why all the main magical families are in biker clubs. Did I miss something?? I think it is an interesting concept, literally what brought me to the book, but I don't understand why motorcycles. Is there an advantage? Is slinging drugs and violence the only path these magical people can take because going to college away from the family is difficult or looked down on?
While I was reading the book, I honestly liked it much more than I do now. I've had time to think about it, while reading it I kinda shut my brain off. Now that it is a week later, this review might be more negative, which is a bummer...
See, I did enjoy the book while reading it. I tried being on Jemmie's side and thought about the mystery alongside her and had a decent time of it. The magic system is pretty interesting– there are specific types of magic which is passed down through the father. Jem seeing the magic was really interesting and I wanted to find out more about why she is different.
It's just once I got to the end of the book and realized it wasn't a standalone, I started having problems. This book now feels like an intro to the series book because of what happens and things I felt should have been explained if it is a series, weren't! And seriously, don't get me started on the romance which makes no sense to me. I'm of a mind to think something completely different and I can't bring myself to like Crowe nor them together.
And as much as I liked the magic and how it affects Jem, she seems to get over her affliction super easily. “Deal with it” is pretty much the instructions. Wow... thanks? How did that work??? Also, I still don't completely understand why she doesn't want to tell people about her differences. Totally didn't understand.
So, where does this leave me? I really liked reading it, but now I'm mostly annoyed. I'm definitely going to recommend it to people wanting a contemporary setting with magic. I just might not read the sequel– it will depend on the synopsis of the next book I suppose.
