A delightfully distracting graphic novel which I hope to eventually continue with the series.
Fabulous romp with phenomenal backgrounds and hilarious expressions. Mr Selim is a firm favorite, and Delilah is no slouch.
I'm enjoying the friendship between Delilah and Selim but I'd like more plot and less boom! pow! biff! Hopefully volume 2 doesn't disappoint since it's already on my shelf.
Wonderful art, a charming (dense, and exotic!) setting, sweet characters, though the plot loses steam a bit. This is brief graphic novel, set in early 19th century Turkey, about a cosmopolitan swashbuckling goddess, Delilah Dirk, and a sweet, introverted, tea-worshipping imperial drone, Selim the Turkish Lieutenant.
The setting was an absolute delight - rich with historical detail. The tone was warm and humor-filled. In some ways, then, it's a bit like that wonderful manga, A Bride's Story (set in 19th century Turkmenistan). I don't normally enjoy swashbuckling, though I did enjoy some of it here.
The plot lost a bit of steam halfway through, and - judging by the reviews of the next two installments - I'm so-so on reading the next ones. But Tony Cliff's research and his art are really great.
I didn't love it, and I didn't dislike it. I will read more in this series to see if it grows on me.
Overall, the art is gorgeous and the idea is amazing. I'm loving the locals, the obsession with tea. There is even a positive gender reversal here that I'm impressed with. Still, the story did NOTHING for me and twice there is a weird daydream sequence that completely ripped me out of the story and confused me.
I trust First Second completely, so I will look forward to more volumes of this and hope the story gets a bit more....compelling.
Loved it! Super fun adventure story with a kick-ass lady adventurer and a bookish tea-drinking dude of color who gets his own heroic moments. Also, it's hilarious.
I loved this story, and I was really hoping to win it from the Goodreads Giveaway, but unfortunately I didn't =/
The good news, though, is that the comic is actually available online, which is where I was able to read it, and I would definitely recommend everyone to check it out: http://www.delilahdirk.com/
You won't be disappointed. The story is fun and fast paced. It's a light read and I think Delilah Dirk is awesome–I would love to cosplay as her!
I can't wait for the nest installment: Delilah Dirk and the Seeds of Good Fortune. The cover looks amazing!
