I originally came across this title on an online list of the top 200 science fiction novels of all time. As with most lists of that sort, most of the novels[return]that made it were so litterary as to be unreadable. While this particular title wasn't, in my opinion, one of the best of all time, it was worthwhile.[return]The characters are believable and well done, and they grow and change throughout the book. This is classic science fiction in that it takes one what-ifreturn and runs with it, fleshing out all of the many implications of that change. In a time when most science fiction[return]tries to build a complete world, the consintration on this one what-if is refreshing. The changes that it causes, and the resulting plot, are well thought[return]out. This is not a space opera. But it is quality sf.

Certainly one of the 10 best science-fiction books I've ever read. Will definitely continue the next book in the series shortly.
I love the initial concept, but by the end of the story the execution is muddled. I enjoyed it, but was disappointed by the conclusion.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can completely understand why it won so many awards. It reminds me of [a:Kim Stanley Robinson 1858 Kim Stanley Robinson http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1217240935p2/1858.jpg]'s Mars series of books, which I liked but it took me awhile to get into. This book grabbed me from the beginning not only about the story but about the political and nuanced questions that were asked. Similar to the Mars series I'm probably going to be thinking about this for a good time afterword. I like it when I book makes me think. I'm usually more on the Fantasy line of things but this book and [a:Kim Stanley Robinson 1858 Kim Stanley Robinson http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1217240935p2/1858.jpg]'s make me want to get more into the SciFi genre more and more. Maybe it is because I'm getting older but I'm wondering more and more what will the future be like and with all our social debates where will end up. This book allows me to look at the good, bad & the ugly and ponder this question.
This did have several intense, fairly tragic moments that fetched tears to my eyes, but it didn't break my heart.
