why did the robots dedicated to throwing off vestiges of humanity, in a book dedicated to queer teens, keep binary genders????????
Hoewel ik het idee van dit boek interessant en veelbelovend vond, liet de uitvoering te wensen over en heb ik niet echt van mijn tijd met dit verhaal genoten.
Er was iets aan de schrijfstijl dat me tegen de haren streek. Een beetje aanmatigend en kleinerend, te uitgesponnen, te veel vertellen in plaats van tonen.
De wereldopbouw was aan het begin van het boek slechts een grote informatiedump. Niet eens verweven in het verhaal, maar gewoon een gigantische tijdlijn om in te studeren. Verder bleef de wereld en hoe die eruit ziet erg vaag.
Wat onze twee hoofdpersonages betreft, ik vond het karakter van Crier leuk genoeg, maar had een actieve hekel aan Ayla.
Ja, Crier is enorm naïef, wat frustrerend kan zijn om te lezen, maar het past wel binnen haar achtergrond en nu zijn we getuige van haar ontwaken waarbij ze zich veel vragen begint te stellen.
Ayla is echter een van die zelfingenomen YA-personages die altijd handelen voordat ze nadenken. Ik ben op een leeftijd gekomen waarop ik overhaast en onbezonnen gedrag op geen enkele manier meer vertederend of vergeeflijk kan vinden. Ze was zo egoïstisch en onnadenkend en brengt voortdurend anderen in gevaar, maar ze heeft nog steeds het gevoel dat ze het bij het rechte eind heeft.
Wat betreft de romantiek tussen deze twee, ik voelde die helemaal niet. Het was gewoon een geval van insta-liefde, terwijl ons een slow burn was beloofd.
Het volstaat te zeggen dat ik niet geïnteresseerd ben om het vervolg te lezen.

The characters are so annoying
They act like teenagers,
they're twenty something they should act like it
Kinok is a well done character tho, no in a way that makes you love him but makes you appreciate him as a well written villain
The politic drama is good
If it was less focused on the characters and their relationships with each other I would've liked it better
my first fantasy wow, i really enjoyed this book & im so excited to read the second, i need to order it ASAP! this took me a while to get through, not because of the book itself but because i was putting it off, i think subconsciously i just didn't want it to end jsjs. even before i started reading i knew i wanted to get to it but i never did because i thought it wouldn't be worth it, boy was i wrong. i'm so glad i finally picked it up!
my god am i glad that i have the sequel sitting on my shelf otherwise i would be SO angsty right now
what a beautiful book, not only in the prose and the gentle and sweet romance, but in the politics and rules of automae. i, robot has been a staple work of literature in my life but i'm loving that books these days are going back to exploring what it means to have created robotic life, their rights, and all the ways it can all go wrong.
pacing was lovely, i felt that there was a really good balance between plot progression and the exploration of the f/f romance. lots of twists at the end that make me eager to throw away my TBR for the sequel, but i want to stew in the greatness of crier's war before jumping into iron heart.
Y'all. This.....was the wlw YA fantasy/sci-fi I've been searching for??? After so many years of reading so many (not so great) books, I finally found a pretty great one.
My brain is fried from this whole entire year, so here are some bullet points:
✓ Compulsively readable
✓ Enemies to (kinda, almost) lovers, back to enemies
✓ Non-human wondering CAN I LOVE???? (A classic. Spoiler alert: she can.)
✓ REBELLING AGAINST A CORRUPT AND PREJUDICED REGIME
✓ Being queer is totally normalized and isn't the cause of any of the conflict
✕ A tiny bit more insta-lovey than I prefer but honestly not bad for YA
✕ Would've loved more development of the side characters
I enjoyed this so much and I can't wait for the next one!
