I'm very impressed by the author's skill in character building. I became so attached to Willow and the mismatched characters who come into her life that I was actually anxious for Willow to have a happy ending. Even though there were some aspects of the book I had trouble with I'd definitely recommend this to kids who are looking for an interesting and introspective book.
Given the number of accolades this book garnered, I was expecting something more. Its very cute and I laughed at how neatly it was all tied up at the end but I did not feel emotionally invested by any of it.
Despite being slightly annoyed by the constant change in voice (not just POV), I absolutely loved it. I loved the air in between the short paragraphs and the punch of the short sentences. The humour. The depth, the breaking apart and then bringing everything back together. The balance.
So well done.
Willow Chance is different. She is brilliant. And, except for her loving parents, Willow keeps to herself. She finds it soothing to count by 7s.
When her parents are killed in an accident, Willow is left to muddle through, to pull together a new set of family members, to find new ways to face the world.
I loved the intriguing, very-flawed-but-human characters in this story. I look forward to reading Sloan's next book.
