Look, this is probably a me-problem. The concept is adorable. I've sometimes entertained the idea that one dog's spirit will lead you to your next great canine companion, because it aches to lose a beloved pet and it's nice to think they support the choice to find a new dog. I didn't dislike the story in general; I disliked how it was told. I hated the frequent attempts to glorify euthanasia - even within a kill shelter - and the detail put into describing when a dog who just needed a mobility cart was put down ‘so he wouldn't suffer.' I hated the author's inability to properly use commas. I hated how artificial the dialogue sounded. But I loved the dogs. And I think I would have loved this short story, if only it were written better.
But it wasn't. I didn't. And that's just how it goes.
Two stars, one for each doggo... with one star removed because The story ends at 59% and the rest is a preview of something else. Bad author, no biscuit!
