Well written, but the story was alas rather simple. And a tad repetitive in the emotional descriptions. For a writer of his originality, I would have expected a more intricate plot and mor development in the characters.
Disappointingly cliche filled and increasingly dull book by someone who clearly has a way with words.
Found this a disappointing read. I don't understand why female characters need to suffer abuse/rape that has no real bearing on the plot. Expected better of John Banville/Mr Black.
I found it a little difficult to get a sense of the period the book was written in at the start. Some of the plot line was a little obvious but a good read none the less
