This went on far too long and a lot of the plot was confusing with Hannah jumping all over the place. There were way too many characters to keep track of, and none of them really had a clear voice. I might continue with the series at some point, I'm hoping much of the confusion goes away with the next books and all the characters were just introductions
I liked it for what it is, a quaint, cozy mystery. If you want Sherlock Holmes, read him. This gave me a much needed break from helping my mom make it through chemo. No earth shattering discoveries with this story but I got to get away. And I'm going to try her recipes but I'm gluten-free so they might not work out as well with rice flour.
I'm not entirely sure what it is that I didn't absolutely love about this book, but there was something. Hannah is an okay character, although she seems to think she's better at everything than everyone else. The mystery itself was fun and kept me interested, but after it was over I was kind of bored with the epilogue. I am excited to try out some of the cookie recipes, even though I don't bake very often! They sound easy and delicious! haha So if anything, it's a good cookbook!
I read this after reading one of the later books in the series and I liked this better. I felt like the characters were much more understandable in this earlier book. Not my favorite cozy mystery series, but an enjoyable listen. I especially like the recipes and descriptions of cooking. The recipes are real life recipes that I'm looking forward to trying in my own kitchen. Especially after hearing about so many cookies - I'm looking forward to having some!
Let's just say that while I thought it a bit cheesy/contrived at first, I might have read more. However, if you're having your characters walk into a space with an at least two day old dead body and it takes them 10 minutes to notice anything out of the ordinary in that room, you're doin' it wrong. Dead bodies STINK. Sorry, but that totally ruined this book for me. If you can overlook such details, you'll probably enjoy it as a cute cozy mystery.
