Adorable & Has A Great Message
According to the author information, this book started as a concept based on a plushie purchased for one of his friends. How cool is that?! It reminds me of when I was much younger and had all these ideas for my own books - ideas which I sadly allowed to fall to the wayside because I just didn't feel I could succeed. Maybe it's not too late to pick some of those ideas up again... With a story like Charlie's, it's hard not to have a little hope that even if one doesn't succeed in the way anticipated they can still find success and happiness in their own way.
I love this book for that, and for being a very cute story overall. The art is adorable and Charlie has great potential to be turned into a children's icon. Imagine it: plushies of Charlie with his little, embroidered scarf, sold as a winter bundle with a copy of the book. I know a few people I'd want something like that for, including myself since I'm a self-proclaimed plushie hoarder (I mean, uh, collector). I could even see this becoming a beloved seasonal cartoon in the right hands. That's how much I think kids will love this!
I haven't run into a book this adorable in a while, and I'll be suggesting it to some of my family and friends who have children of their own. The message Charlie provides is one kids need: you can't always achieve your dreams through the usual means, but that doesn't mean you can't accomplish greatness regardless.
