This was only the third Grisham novel I read. I love how each follows a different idea of what is going on. This is one of my favorites by him. Following Mercer through the entire investigation looking into the stolen Fitzgerald Manuscripts was fun. Grisham is a master storyteller and this was not a disappointment.
It's pretty difficult to write a surprising review of anything Grisham has written because all of the good has been said about him in myriad ways. I recently found myself on Amelia Island when the release of his latest, Camino Ghosts, arrived in bookstores. I visited Story & Song, a local bookstore in Fernandina Beach, and picked it up, along with the previous two, Camino Island and Camino Winds. I was happy to experience his mastery of the “beach book” vibe. His descriptions of the beach, dunes, bookstores, coffee shops all made me wish that I were back there again. He really knows how to bring an area to life in a book. I could hardly put it down. Toward the end there were a few pages where I felt like the revelation and interactions of some B and C characters lost me a bit and I found myself skimming as opposed to hanging on every word. Still, that only lasted for a few pages and then I was back into it. Loved the ending. And as is Grisham's way, it's not at all what you think.
Gave John Grisham another chance.
Not all too impressed. His stories are very slow and dull in my opinion. Enough of his work for me.
I enjoyed this book! Great to read on the beach to enjoy a little mystery
Warm, rambling semi-thriller of rare book thieves and writers drinking wine on an island. I got so much enjoyment from this book, not the least because I would love to have the life it's characters do. So, so ready to read the sequel and spend more time in this world.
Entertaining if only because it takes place in the world of books and writers, and the reader (of the audiobook) was pleasant, but the writing is no better than other Grisham books.
A great page turning from John Grisham like always. The characters are not that interesting, but there are loads of critiques and comments about the book publishing world that's beyond mildly interesting. One thing that's true to heart is that Carbondale, IL is not cold during the winter time! Eight inches of snow in Southern Illinois is almost impossible.
Did not enjoy this one at all. Given that the characters are predominantly writers, it seems that Grisham might be trying to show readers a bit of that world. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen. Or a plot twist. Or any kind of drama at all. There was none. Simple story with little of note that happens. I enjoy Grisham, but this one seemed like it was written to fulfill a contract. (Something one of the characters in the book joked about–which seemed like it might have been a bit of hidden messaging by Grisham.)
