In the world's most magical city where spirits run noodle shops and cash-strapped dragons stage photo-ops for tourists, people still think fairies are nothing but stories, and that's exactly how the fairies like it. It's a lot easier to feast on humanity's dreams when no one believes you exist. But while this arrangement works splendidly for most fair folk, Lola isn't one of the lucky ones. She's a changeling, a fairy monster made just human enough to dupe unlucky parents. She was only supposed to live long enough for the fairy who created her to get away with the real baby, but thanks to Victor Conrath, a very powerful--and very illegal--blood mage, Lola was given the means to cheat death. For a price. Now the only changeling ever to make it to adulthood, Lola has served the blood mage faithfully, if reluctantly, for twenty years. Her unique ability to slip through wards and change her shape to look like anyone has helped make Victor a legend in the DFZ's illegal-magic underground. It's not a great life, but at least the work is stable? until her master suddenly vanishes without a trace. With only a handful of the pills that keep her human left, Lola must find Victor before the magic runs out and she turns back into the monster she was always meant to be. But with the federal paladins hunting her as a blood-mage accomplice, an Urban Legend on a silent black motorcycle who won't leave her alone, and a mysterious fairy king with the power to make the entire city dream, Lola's chances of getting out of this alive are as slender as a silver thread.

Lola FTW!
Disclaimer: I'm usually not a big fan of anything fae. BUT! Lola! She is such a wonderful new protagonist, and she made it so easy to root for her. I loved getting to know her and her slice of the DFZ world and her group of friends and possible allies.
If “By a Silver Thread” is anything to go by (and, knowing Rachel Aaron's books, I'm pretty sure it is!), this series is going to be an excellent addition to the DFZ story universe, and I can't wait for the next book!
(And while it's not mandatory to have read any of the previous DFZ series, there are plenty of little nods to the other books as an extra little bonus for the long-time readers.)
A fun little book for a quiet evening at home. As always with Rachel Aaron, this book is snappily written and set in the very creative and whimsical DFZ. I thought this series so far didn't live up to Heartstrikers and DFZ in inhabiting the setting and immersing the reader in the magic of it, and it probably contained my least favorite romance of the three series (although I'm completely forgetting who the male interest was in the first DFZ series, so there you go). Still, with Aaron, you kind of know what you're going to get, and the plot is fast-paced and fun with satisfying endings and a nice setup for the rest of the series.
