The pen is mightier than the sword, is the basic message of this book. Or, at least, the pen is an essential part of any progressive movement. The essays here are by a variety of writers–diverse in nationality and ethnicity, but they share a devotion to the idea of the writer–the novelist, especially–as an essential witness.
