I was surprised to find this kinda an epic story telling - I didn't anticipate it to get dark but it went there more times than I expected, which was cool. I see a lot of middle graders read this and I think it's great for their age. It reminds me a lot of the amulet series. Even though I read all of them consequentially sometimes things seemed to skip around? The world building was good enough to make me want more. Has an interesting art style, which sometimes works and sometimes clashes - especially next to a human character. Ultimately, I really enjoyed this! After reading Rose in the series, a prequel with the grandma, I was really craving the watercolor artstyle really blew up the fantasy element - fairy tale feeling- and I felt kinda robbed the whole series wasn't in that style. The Rose tale was actually my favorite book in the series. If you happened to give up on bone, just skip to Rose cause it's on the next level imo.
