Fired from his job at the Tulsa Zoo, 26-year-old Zane Clearwater wakes from an alcohol-and cough syrup-induced blackout to learn his mother was killed the night before in a fire in their trailer-park home. Zane has no memory of that night--could he have set the blaze? The police have a lot of questions, but so do Zane and his 14-year-old sister Lettie. Zane's relationship with his mother had been fractious, and he has no memory of that night. But when he gets a mysterious text that indicates everything she'd ever told him about her past and his own history was a lie, he embarks on a journey of discovery that results in meeting his supposedly long-dead father. Jeremiah Doom is a Navajo with a dangerous streak as long as the Arkansas River and a shady, secretive life. But he's welcoming, and Zane ignores the inner voices that warn his mother might have had an extremely good reason for keeping them apart. The police close in on Zane as their connection deepens, and he's forced to make a choice between the life he's known and the blood in his veins, even though it puts everything and everyone he's ever cared about in danger.
