I'm not familiar with the author but this reads like YA fiction. The protagonist is dully “different” in such a generic way, she's just annoying. I was so bored, I couldn't make it through the first chapter.
3.5 ✨What a funny author! I loved her writing style!
My only critique is that the book was SOOO good in some parts but so cheesy in other parts!
Overall a good book. Just a bit inconsistent.
The ending felt like a fever dream to me. This is my 2nd Rachel Harrison read and I'm quickly becoming a fan.
I've been meaning to read one of Rachel Harrison's book for quite a while now, and this did not disappoint. I love a good jaded main character with a “dry” voice. I know this is supposed to be cozy horror but there was some true gnarly imagery in this! Overall, I enjoyed this a lot.
Also, they better get Sophie Thatcher's agent on the phone if they ever adapt this into a movie.
At once a delightful romp of a family reunion and a moving account of the journey to break free of familial trauma and roar into self-determination.
The notion that you can't change the life you're born into but that you can work to change the life you ultimately lead is not new, but it's massively important. Those of us who have had to learn that firsthand still need to be reminded about it sometimes. The back half of this book hit me like a bag of bricks, man. It was powerful! Rachel Harrison rocks.
It pains me to not give this the full five star treatment, but I did have one gripe. I was told more than once that there would be this mindblowing twist fairly early on and I somehow unravelled that twist almost instantly. I'm not good at that kind of thing and I never willfully attempt it, but this one clicked into place in my mind immediately and it got the book and I off to a bad start because I was twiddling my thumbs for a few dozen pages. It was more the fault of word of mouth and coy marketing than the book itself - this is my third Rachel Harrison read to date and I'm definitely a fan - but it did jeopardize what eventually became an immensely rewarding read.
This went on far too long, I think it would've had a bigger impact as a short story. I went into this blind and the reveal of the group being Satanists not Jesus followers was very effective. Following that, the reveal that Lucifer was her father was neat but expected. I also like how she was able to harm others by her mind powersOther than that, this book dragged, and all of that stuff happens fairly early throughout the middle of the book. The writing was good, just too drawn out.
This book was PHENOMENAL. It was a bit slow in the first half but I didn't mind. This has got to be one of the best last half of a book I have ever read it went into a direction which I absolutely was over the moon about and it answered the questions I had in the first half. I just absolutely loved the way this story went and I found the main character to be absolutely loveable and her point of view was so fun to read from and she lowkey may be one of my favorite main characters I have read from. I definitely plan to read more from Rachel Harrison because this was phenomenal. I am so happy I have had 3 back to back to back 5 stars!
