Dammit, Cat was my favourite character :( Out of all the 7 mains, why why why did it have to be her who died.

Initial Thoughts:I listened to the audiobook for this and like the Illuminae Files it has a full cast and is an amazing production. I loved the various characters in this book and loved that we got to meet them all in the first book rather than slowly introducing them throughout the trilogy. There was a lot of information thrown at you at first but I was able to quickly figure out each character's place in the squad and loved each character, especially Magellan!

So normally I don't read books as soon as they come out but if you preordered this book you will get an Iluminae novella and I absolutely must have that novella so of course I preordered it. Even though my motivation for getting this book as soon as it came out was because of the novella I was still excited to read it and for good reason.
I absolutely loved The Illuminae Files trilogy so I had high hopes going into this book. While I didn't love this one as much I still really enjoyed it. It definitely did not disappoint. It took a little bit for me to get into this and understand what was going on but that was the case with Illuminae as well. I think it's just what these authors are good at. They throw you in immediately and explain later.
This book has 7 different perspectives although you don't get much from Zila in her own chapters which just makes me wonder what's the point in her character but I am hoping we get more of her in the next book. I have mentioned several times before that reading a book with so many character POVs can easily confuse me. Luckily that was never the case here. I couldn't tell you who my favorite character was because I genuinely loved them all. At first I wasn't a big fan of cat but she redeemed herself in the end.
Honestly I only have 2 little niggles with this book. First is it has some long chapters which I don't personally like but isn't really a big deal. Lastly, and the reason I took off a half star is that it was missing something and I can't even tell you what that is. I didn't feel as emotionally connected with the characters like I did with Illuminae. As you can tell though I still really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to book 2 and I highly recommend you read this if you haven't already and if you want too.
They were not lying when they described this book as Guardians of the Galaxy meets the Breakfast Club. I /loved/ this book. I think I was 50 pages in or so when I decided right then and there that I needed a Kal standalone. I think he's my favorite of the bunch, simply because, if we're comparing the crew to the Guardians, he's the Drax 100% and he's just perfect. I'm really looking forward to rereading this book once it is released and having the final copy in my hands. I'm also really looking forward to seeing where the series goes from here and what kind of shenanigans the group with get into.
