Didn't know wtf was going on or what she was talking about half the time so I'm quitting while I'm ahead. I'm being a bit dramatic, but there were so many references to things I did not understand and I am not in the mood to be googling shit. DNF at like?? less than 10%.
What the fuck did I just read? I think I need to sit with this book a while. Did I hate it? No. Did I like it? I don't know... I was compelled to keep going but also I was disgusted. lol
I think the Authors goal was to write a book with every”trigger warning” known to mankind… Which was fine, however the intense story just fizzled out at the end. 2 Stars ⭐️⭐️!
One sentence synopsis... Thirty, flirty, and not-so-thriving Joan narrates her descent into depravity after one too many traumatic events push her over the edge.
.
Read it if you like... ‘My Year of Rest and Relaxation' or ‘Luster'.
.
Dream casting... Allison Williams, Alexandra Daddario, or Leighton Meester as Joan.
This book wasn't for me. Taddeo is an extremely talented writer and I found the first half of the book compelling and darkly engrossing. But I found the book became too much for me in the last 10%. Personally I found it too provocative and gratuitous.
Trigger warnings for murder, multiple scenes of rape and sexual assault as well as scenes of very harrowing violence. For example this book contains a description of a miscarriage and a vivid description of a crime scene. If these things are too triggering for you just be warned.
Thanks to the author Lisa Taddeo, Bloomsbury and Netgalley for a review copy in exchange for an honest review.
