this had a very interesting concept in terms of the spin given to the main character. often the ability to be part of an investigation was narrowed down to being a genius, having faced a serial killer before, or being in the military. this however is a novel idea. A magician or illusionist.
obviously coming from the unique understanding of the authors looking glass into both fields though his own skillset and that of the people around him he crafted a character that is a unique blend of information.
I do have to say that I enjoyed a male author in his attempt on a female character and was happy that It was not over-sexualized as other than the few parts that seemed alright. you can also see the author's thoughts on certain topics such as religion and certain human behavior through Jessica's thoughts at the beginning of the book.
while all of these gives a book aimed for success i was slightly disappointed by the ending but not to much but its what kept the rating at a 4 and not a 5
Bought this on sale for my Kindle when I read the plot summary and thought, “Ahh, what the hell.” I was pretty surprised when this turned out to be way better than I was expecting! I thought this was going to be just an average FBI thriller novel, and on some levels, it was, but it was also an extremely unique take on the genre. I've definitely never read a novel about a magician-turned-FBI agent before, and while it was a little far-fetched at times, it actually made for a compelling and interesting read. Seeing Blackwood use her knowledge of magic tricks and illusions to thwart the much larger machinations of the “Warlock” was actually really fascinating and a cool idea. I was definitely skeptical when I started reading, but I'm more impressed than I thought I would be. I definitely would like to read the next book in the series; hopefully I can get around to it at some point.
This just wasn't my type of book.
In the beginning, I did find the writing enjoyable and truly intriguing. I wanted to know. I was in her world and looking through her eyes. Yet, it just couldn't keep me.
I was listening to this as an audiobook on my way home from commutes so, it is common for my mind to wander here and there but, this book... there were times I even skipped forward because the main character was still rambling on. I didn't think a lot of her thought process was even important to her character development. Yes, we learn about her background which can be interesting, we understand why she knows what she does but, after a while I was so done.
I did find the tricks/crimes fascinating and wanted to know how they were done. I hung on to these instances like a lifeline. The interesting parts that forced me to keep going. Sometimes all Jessica's thoughts and fears would overshadow it. I still do not completely know how the first trick was done –but again, I might have drifted.
Spoiler??? Not really though??
Honestly, I almost put this book down twice and the last time I only had 40 minutes left of the book. It was supposed to be a major event and possibly even incite panic and worry within the reader yet, I was bored.
The other characters were backdrop, not really given dimension. The only other character I liked was Daimion (?) and he is Jessica's stalker. Seriously now, I surprised the FBI didn't just hire him! He was doing most of the work...
Anyhow, I powered through.
Not a book I would recommend people except though you really love mystery and detective stories looking for something to hold them over until the book they really want to read is available.
Decent FBI-type mystery. The author shows a lot of potential but is still pretty raw. Lots of angst, flashbacks, ideas that are all repetitious and not very interesting.
