All This Marvelous Potential

Robert Kennedy's 1968 Tour of Appalachia

2020 • 304 pages

Kennedy sat behind a large wooden table positioned in the foul lane at one end of the basketball court. Next to him but a bit farther back from the table sat Congressman Perkins. Opposite them was another large table for witnesses. Spectators sat in folding chairs on the floor and in the bleachers on both sides of the court. Sunlight streamed through the windows above the bleachers, near the roof of the gym. A ten o'clock, Kennedy opened the heating. "This visit has a special meaning to me because of the greater interest that President Kennedy took in this area, and the fact that he had intended to come here in December of 1963. Now that I'm here and meeting and talking to you, and observing this beautiful land-all this marvelous potential-my visit has ever greater meaning." Book jacket.
