Another fabulous read from Sarah Waters, she is quickly becoming one of my fave authors!!
Even in Victorian times people would quite happily piss on your chips. Trust no one.
My second Sarah Waters novel. This was fascinating, though I did not like it as much as I liked The Night Watch.
I really enjoyed the writing here, the slow rumbling of the plot interspersed with Selina's diary entries. It did start to lose me in the end and I was disappointed that the end was exactly what I suspected it to be. I really wanted a different outcome. Not necessarily a happy ending or a cleverer ending, just a different one. Margaret's descent into madness kind of started to grate on me as well. I wanted her to be stronger, better....less head in the clouds, but she was complex at times and so brave for as far as she went.
I surely enjoyed this enough to read Sarah Waters's other books!
