A Woman Made of Snow

3.5 stars. A fun and intriguing historical fiction - with enough of a mystery to keep me hooked.

I thought this was a beautifully written, evocative novel. Gifford has a real talent for lyrical descriptions and the characters were really well drawn. You can feel Caro's frustration at trying to fit in with the family and with the conventions of the period. The mystery at the centre was heartbreaking and I loved the story of the grandparents and the descriptions of the voyage.

A beautifully written story that I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

It was sad and heartbreaking at times which made me want to reach into book and give some of the characters a big hug. On the other hand, there were also a couple of characters that I really wouldn't have minded throttling! They were horrible!

There was some beautiful writing especially when we followed Oliver's journey. The descriptions of the artic, where the Inuits lived, the clothes they wore, etc was really well done. I liked that we got to read about Oliver's journey firsthand rather than just through letters or second hand recollections.
