A Transparent Illusion
The water vision in Hekhalot Zutarti continues an ancient tradition of exegesis of Ezekiel 1 as an account of a heavenly ascent. "Water" signifies materiality and impurity in opposition to the fiery substance (hashmal) of the celestial temple above the firmament.
