Martial arts practitioners will find inspiration in Karl Geis's moving memoir of a life devoted to the study and the teaching of aikido. Here are the author's early days, the wisdom he absorbed from his father and later applied to his martial arts education, the ways in which aikido helped him come to terms with the frustrations of daily life, the factors that moved him to become sensei, the lessons he has learned from his students, and how his relationships with them have changed. The book discusses aikido -- its techniques and philosophical underpinnings -- in vivid detail, but more important, paints a humane portrait of a life lived in the martial arts.

For someone who has practiced the martial art of Aikido for only 3 years Sensei Geis speaks with a deep understanding and knowledge. The wisdom is hidden in what seems like simple anecdotes. A book I will read again as my martial arts practice continues.
