Not bad... I don't know what I was expecting but the five books combined didn't leave me with much. I enjoyed exploring the critics, and Santa Teresa... but I feel very underwhelmed after all of it.

2666 feels like one of the most important books of the 21st century. I previously read Savage Detectives and enjoyed it but wasn't captivated. With that in mind, I let 2666 sit on my shelf for several years before finally picking it up.
2666 is entertaining, beautiful, and funny. At the same time, from the very start, there's a sense of something sinister hiding around the next page / corner - though it resists the reader pinpointing that dread. It's not a character, per se. It's not (just) the vivid abuse and body horror. Instead it's a sense that all of society is pounding, driving toward obliteration.
That drive to obliterate is everywhere. Some aimless academics beat a cab driver to a pulp. Oscar Fate drinks himself into a scary situation. Amalfitano hangs a book on his clothesline to let it cook in the hot sun. A vagrant breaks into churches and soils the holy spirit. A Romanian general is crucified, left only with bits of tattered uniform. And women keep showing up dead.
All the while I felt like a creature crawling across the vast desert floor with the vulture of the black Peregrino dipping in and out of sight.
I read this while re-watching Twin Peaks and playing Disco Elysium and I found a lot of harmony between the works. Twin Peaks' story is of a woman crying for help and those around her numbing themselves to the horror (compare, Florita Almada). Disco Elysium establishes a world so complex that it has collapsed in on itself and destroyed us all in the process. In both, characters bounce off each other like atoms, often oblivious to the destruction they leave in their path.
There's so much to love about 2666. Part 4 is heartbreaking. The women given a bit of justice in Bolano's memorial, before the police and public glam on to the next shiny object. I really appreciated the backdrop of Santa Teresa - full of maquiladoras and sex workers and cartels and so many people just trying to make it to a better tomorrow.
I hope I get the chance to revisit this book some day. I think it will stick with me for a long time.
One of the astonishing pieces of literature that I have come across. It's scale and scope matches a science fiction novel while it's writing contests with the greatest of writers. At times I plodded but then strode through this novel of vivid and dark imaginings and I'm left thinking 'what have i just read?', or is that too shallow of a question.
Bolano is special, his writing pure. It's a tragedy that his talent and life was taken before this was released, particularly as I would have loved to see how he would have wanted this to be printed- in separate parts or as one connected novel? Each part smoothly negotiated with eachother, leaving new crumbs of knowledge littered throughout which became staggering to piece together.
My only qualm is the last part, part 5. The writing was immaculate and the story fantastic, but the complete tonal shift from part 4 where murder was bleak threatened to nearly capsize my growing love for this work. Nevertheless, the last 20 pages saved this for me, but did it feel a little too late? I'm unsure.
Regardless of this, I'm glad I got to appreciate these stories and to read a master at work in Bolano, what a mysterious legacy to leave.
Parts of this were beautifully written but other parts felt like a slog. I'm not really sure what to make of it.
Didn't know what I was getting into. Each Part a major phase change with unexpected connections (as well as drifting offshoots) - some of which I'm tempted to revisit. Got stuck on the several hundred pages outlining one murder and crime scene after another, but even that section gathered momentum in an innovative way. Encouraged to read more, especially the genuine “completed” works.
Este libro es un monstruo, pero lo amé. Tuve que dejarlo en varias ocaciones porque no podía seguir (por supuesto “la parte de los crímenes” sobre los feminicidios en Santa Teresa), estaba soñando diario sobre él y no me dejaba descansar ni dormida, ni despierta.
Seguro voy a seguir pensando en varias de las historias por mucho tiempo y creo que este libro se va a digerir poquito a poquito por la cantidad de cosas que quedan abiertas (en el libro y en la lectora).
La forma en que da la vuelta y cierra el círculo de los 5 capítulos/libros es perfecta y por un momento pensé que lo que seguía era empezar el libro otra vez (creo que no lo voy a hacer de inmediato, pero quien sabe, a lo mejor en un par de semanas). Y me sigue volando la cabeza como hizo Bolaño para dar seguimiento a la cantidad de personajes e hilos que se fueron deshebrando en este libro, hasta dejar historias finitas que en sí mismas son una pequeña novelita.

Im still trying to understand how this book makes me feel, is almost like a massive waterfall that when approached near it dissolves into air. Bolaño is a natural storyteller and that is undeniable, the capacity of encapsulating so many different stories and perspectives in one book is magnificent. However, sadly, the author ended first than the book and the incomplete marks that his death left on the book are more than visible. The pain of the uncertainty, i wish i could see beyond all of that, i wish i had meet you so you could tell me how things end, even tho a part of me knows. I killed this book pushing it down the window, the rain suffocated the pages, i feel better knowing that the end is far.
Es un buen libro. No un libro imprescindible ni una obra maestra ni lo mejor de Bolaño, como dicen algunos, pero sí un buen libro, en ocasiones excelente, que recomendaría en especial a quienes hayan leído otras novelas del autor y ya sepan que les gusta, o mejor aún que les encanta. Incluso estuve a punto de darle cuatro estrellas, pero me di cuenta de que era una trampa psicológica, el deseo de convencerme, después de leer mil doscientas páginas, de que valió completamente la pena.
Para mí la mejor parte es la primera, La parte de los críticos, porque es la más interesante a nivel emocional, la más entretenida, la única que destaca por el humor (que en todo caso, entiendo bien, desentonaría en otros segmentos); en síntesis la más redonda. Prácticamente todo el contenido mantuvo mi atención y la satisfizo, incluyendo el misterio de Archimboldi, el triángulo —eventual cuadrado— amoroso, los diálogos, sueños y aventuras varias.
En La parte de Amalfitano y La parte de Fate ya se encuentran secciones enteras que no aportan demasiado, en que se abusa de la descripción y la narración de situaciones cotidianas en expresión prosaica: decenas de páginas que tientan el aburrimiento. ¿Por qué dedicar tanto tiempo, por ejemplo, al trabajo periodístico de Fate previo al asunto de la pelea? ¿Era tan interesante? No lo creo. Después está la famosa Parte de los crímenes, que es al mismo tiempo la más ambiciosa y original y la más inconsistente. Las historias hablan por sí mismas y su efecto, aunque varíe según el lector, es indiscutible. Por otro lado, desearía que más de ellas resultaran individualmente memorables, e incluso sentí que personajes como Lalo Cura o Juan de Dios Martínez podrían protagonizar sus propias novelas.
Leyendo La parte de Archimboldi me percaté de un defecto que recorre toda la obra, pero que se hace más evidente hacia el final. El gusto por la proliferación de historias dentro de historias, la manía de los desvíos narrativos, que en su mayoría son valiosos y aportan a los temas del conjunto, desfavorece en cambio el desarrollo de personajes. Éstos funcionan, a veces, como meros espectadores o consumidores de historias ajenas, transitando lugares y épocas de una forma extremadamente pasiva. La estructura centrífuga a la que me refiero es en realidad síntoma de un problema mayor, que podría llamar, tal vez con injusticia, falta de humanidad.
Para aclarar una acusación tan fuerte: no quiero decir que falte idealismo en la representación física del mundo, que ha sido, como se sabe, un asco para demasiadas personas a lo largo de la historia, y el enfoque sobre el lado lamentable de la realidad no es de por sí un punto negativo. No obstante, sentí durante la lectura que los personajes carecían inusitadamente de ilusiones, deseos, inocencia u otras “fuerzas del bien”, que al contrastar con los acontecimientos habrían incrementado el efecto emocional de la novela. Por supuesto, hay algunos gestos aislados de los que se puede inferir bondad o empatía, como la aproximación de Hans Reiter a Ansky, o el llanto de Juan de Dios Martínez. Pero por la mayor parte los personajes parecen indiferentes a su identidad y su destino, como si simplemente fueran, lo cual contribuyó en último término a mi propia indiferencia.
Me concentré en criticar, pero repito que es un buen libro, y muchos pasajes posteriores a la primera parte también me encantaron, como los juegos intelectuales de Amalfitano, el caso del profanador de iglesias, la historia de la vidente y sus apariciones públicas, la infancia de Archimboldi, las revelaciones finales, etc.
A vast sprawling Pyncheonesque read
Engrossing many-threaded story with few neat endings. Many great characters kept drawing me in. The longest section, Part 4, a fast cutting litany of femicides leaves me with the idea that extending the idea of Murder on the Orient Express the killers may be an entire society.
¿Como le puedo dar cinco estrellas a este libro, si ni siquiera puedo decir de que se trata? Se me hace imposible desribir a 2666. Sin embargo, lo encontré maravilloso y potente. No le encuentro sentido alguno – ningun Gran Tema – pero es una representación captivante de los trastornos de la vida real.
La cuarta parte... fué dificil. Me tomó un mes leerla, pues es muy horroroso leer demasiado de cantazo. Hubieron muchos momentos en que quize dejar el libro... pero persistí, y valió la pena. Es duro, pero merece ser leido.
No sé como recomendar a 2666, ni a quien. A los 20 años, no habría manera de que yo lo disfrutara. A los 30, lo dudo. Quizas cuando tenga 55 lo vuelva a leer, y a ver que le saco.
This is I'm sure a very literate and well written book but it just became too much hard work.
I can take the post-modernist view ( “Dorian” by Will Self ) of the world and don't wear rose-tinted glasses, (I loved “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy), but the endless list of rapes and murders was not my cup of meat.
If this will lead to the solving of some of these murders ( or the prevention of new ones) then it's worth anybody's distaste, but I don't think it will...review fades to ambiguity and obscurity...
