Como qualquer livro de fantasia, foi moroso e confuso especialmente no que toca a nomes. Sei que acrescentam dinamismo, mas não fui grande fã das canções (se bem que a tradução não faz milagres). A nível de enredo, surpreendeu-me a rapidez com a qual se lidou com o desaparecimento do Gandalf, pela negativa.

Esperava bem mais dado o hype, demasiadas personagens e pouco brilhantismo para um primeiro livro. Se calhar não é para mim, mas para um livro de 300 páginas pareceu um de 700, muito perto de marcar como dnf.

É costume o primeiro livro das séries ser o melhor, especialmente em ficção científica. O que Pierce Brown havia feito com Red Rising foi bom, mas semi-genérico e com poucas razões para querermos saber do protagonista. Falo por muito quando digo que estávamos mais investidos em Sevro, Mustang ou até do poeta Roque. Em Golden Son, ficamos a perceber Darrow e a forma como os erros que comete (apaixonar-se e perdoar) o vão mudar nesta missão suicida.

Aquele final. A saga não tem nada de YA e não é nada recomendado para adolescentes: é violenta, é cruel, é demasiado humana e com traços políticos que um adolescente teria dificuldade em perceber. Foi uma viagem autêntica repleta de twists que me levaram a ter a mesma sensação de A Song of Ice and Fire: ninguém está a salvo. Todos podem morrer (i mean, vamos listá-los: Victra, Lorn, Nero - o antagonista - e Ares - o mentor, o líder da revolução).

Durante aquele fatídico capítulo, pensei a cada linha que passava que ia ser a cabeça de Mustang naquela caixa. E o que descobriríamos? Que perder Mustang quebraria Darrow mais ainda do que o homem que executou a mulher e o mentor que permitia que tal acontecesse.

Para Morning Sun, palpita-me que Darrow irá liderar a revolução, já que - sendo o POV - não irá morrer, à partida (DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT PIERCE). Ainda temos Sevro, ainda temos Mustang, ainda temos Ragnar. Há uma base, falta saber como Darrow a utilizará para vencer.

Incrível, 10/10.

Leitura satisfatória, ficam os diálogos entre Pedro, o aspirante a escritor, e Gary List, o mentor ressabiado.

Não sou fã de murder mysteries, e nesse aspeto este não seria dos meus preferidos.

“Quando abri os olhos, vi, no chão do quarto, o general Lee e Ulysses S. Grant, cada um comandando um pequeno exército de soldadinhos, aproximarem-se da cama, saídos da caixa que há sete anos eu guardava debaixo do armário. Vinham ajudar-me.”

“Mas não existe maneira, pois não? Aconteça o que acontecer, ela espera-nos. É paciente, compreensiva, aceita tudo e todos. Nunca me tinha ocorrido isto, mas a morte - perdão, a Morte - é a mais democrática das instituições.”

Uma narrativa triste e de contínua decadência, impulsionou-me a voltar à escrita.

Interesting promise, but nothing to show for it. The end of the world is barely disclosed and the hotel drama revolves around a christian fanatic how murdered a girl. It felt too contextual at times and not suitable for a reader to enjoy.

2 stars because it didn't take up a lot of my time.

i have to say i took a while to finish this. the revelations at the end had me glued to the book, looking forward for the next two.

liked the usage of cain/abel to depict good and evil, but a little disappointed to not see more karlhammer to be honest.

i think i loved this book. i cannot be sure until a few days have passed, but my word: the writing! i thought i knew good writing until i read this book, and i'm absolutely astounded with stuart's quality. it was confusing, yes, with a ton of characters that i couldn't really describe because there are so many, but its entangled web reminds me of twin peaks, somehow, since this book doesn't really explain the supernatural element that gives it life, leaving some degree of fantasy to it.

not five stars because of the complexity you just can't grasp in a first reading, but re reading this will prove worth the time and elevate my overall opinion.

i guess i was expecting something much more personal from the eventual mole/killer so ended up quite underhwelmed. It was a good read, very fast-paced, which i've been enjoying as of late, but fast-paced thrillers seem to lack a real good twist for me. I guess we're going back to reading sci fi.

i found it hard to connect to basically every character (simon might be the only i was fine with). red was super annoying and disconnected, and i ran out of fingers to count the amount of times i implored anyone to knock oliver out or throw him out of the rv, it became genuinely infuriating at points how everyone tried to reason with this entitled bitch instead of putting him to sleep woth a microwave.

three starts for the entertainment value and the nice antagonist.

Well let's just say I sacrificed my sleep schedule to finish this book. It's fast paced and very well made with regards to this kind of book: a load of characters, but only a few get introduced, which made it easier to suspect. The one flaw was maybe the transition from Liz being small and innocent to the actual fucking killer. I felt it was too sudden and not well made, even if her alibi was good.

But i couldn't put it down, and that's exactly what I wanted.

To think this is a debut novel is quite remarkable in itself. Riddle really touches the concepts I'm interested in and does so by nailing the structure and the plot twists along the way, finishing with a satisfying ending that almost forces you to start reading the sequel. A sci-fi must.
