I was hoping for a stronger narrative about the psychological aspects of the struggle faced by Katy and her parents. If you're into investigative journalism this book's style would suit you well.
3.5 stars would be more accurate. I enjoyed the characters, story, and plot, but it simply felt like there was something missing that could have made it extraordinary.
I enjoyed this book, but I think I would have enjoyed it even more if I had skipped reading reviews prior to pulling it off the shelf. Plot points revealed in most reviews took away from the discoveries meant to take place as you read. I enjoyed the characters and was left wanting to know more about them. The end felt anticlimactic to me, but that is likely more of a preference thing than an issue with the book itself.
It was alright, but I kept getting bored. Was more drawn to side characters than feeling anything for the main character.??
when i first heard about this book i wasn't immediately interested, but given all of the controversy in the book world with bans and challenges i felt like i needed to read it just to see what all the fuss was about. this book deepened my understanding of pronoun choice, especially those that seem ‘outside the norm' (i.e. she, he, they). if anything, reading the book has moved me from a position of neutrality on the title to one of strong support. this is an important work to have available for those who need the ability to see themselves in a piece of work and for those who are seeking to better understand the inner lives of others.??
when i first started the book i wasn't sure i was even going to like the main characters. but here i am baking cookies to comfort myself at their loss.
I really wanted to like this book, but it was only a 2.5 star title for me. The language was beautiful and the premise was great, but the ending felt rushed and a bit haphazard.
I was really hoping to like this book because of a beautiful quote I'd come across from it. I was highly disappointed and couldn't even bring myself to finish it.
If you're looking for a story that ends up happily ever after this may not be your cup of tea. Suspense grew gently, without the feel of it happening, to a point where I suddenly realized it was 6AM and I was still reading. The descriptions throughout the text were so detailed that I often felt like I could feel the air on my own skin. The story moved along seamlessly, without any hiccups in the plot or any misaligned details. Simply beautiful writing.
On a personal level this was about a 2.5 star read. I was hoping for more insights and revelations for myself because of the buzz I'd heard. However, I can see this being a 4 star book for those who find it at the right time in their journey.
