Amber Mcbride's poetry is beautiful in every form. I loved her YA in verse debut ‘‘Me Moth” and Mcbride was an instant auto read author. This is her debut poetry collection and i love the poetry of rootwork is included in every work. The poems are heartfelt, uplifting and deconstructions of the church, america and black womenhood. I really recommend all of her work
Act one is a novella that consists of 4 short stories. One about a struggling screenwriter, one at an eating fried food event, a grieving professor and a new neighbor meet cute. Talking about something being cute, each story was cute, was different and centered gay longing. You didn't feel that a story was an repeat with different names. The titled story ‘Act one' and Judy's plan are my favorites. Act one had hurt comfort and the second-rate superhero costuming was charming. The second story was just plain cutesy. Give it a try to put a smile on your face.
Woody wrote 3 dimensional 17/18 yr old main characters. I like how they created the romance and the fake dating scheme sounded believable in this situation. The boys, both of them had do deal with parental neglect. Jonas especially. You could see why they hated each other and it wasn't a mere miscommunication but how their home life impacted how they saw one another. I love how Woody talked about mental health, anxiety and panic attacks. That parental relationships can heal with time and work but sometimes there's not else what can be done. Going back to this romance feeling realistic, I love how Dylan and Jonas started to trust each other and opened up. Jonas ‘s stress to provide for his younger sisters , being poor and Dylan ‘s panic attacks. The book needed those 350 pages that took place over the span of 8 months. How they hate each other is baking romance undercover
I had been waiting since the book acquisition was announced in mid-December 2020. I frequently see horror movie reviews on Cale's insta stories. I should not have been surprised to see he wrote and sold a slasher with a gay lead but still excited to read it. When I read his debut “ The Friend Scheme “ in 2017 I knew I needed whatever would be published in the future. It was delayed by almost a whole year from May 2022 to Feb of this year. Personally speaking, it was worth the wait.
You could say The Pledge is the sequel to a slasher if it were a movie. With how the book opens. Sam is traumatized by being the final boy from a massacre two years back. He forces himself back into the world at the therapist's request by enrolling in an out-of-state university. His hot RA invites him to a fraternity “ open night”. (Ya know
I've always loved fairy tales, folklore and mythology growing up. Seeing the names in At Midnight I had to jump in. I really enjoyed this one. I liked the majority with three stars here and there. I liked that Lesser used and / or lesser known Hans Christian Anderson and Grimm where chosen for inspiration. I liked that I became aware of Fitcher???s Bird ( heavy bluebeard vibes ) The anthology has hit after hit right of the jump. With classism, racism , body issues, colonialism addressed in the stories. Not every story but it was needed for the stories that did. I sadly had disappointments. And I have my favorites. Others weren't a surprise cause I enjoy their writing and of others I need to read more and I don't care in what format I need more. Malinda Lo , Gita Trelease, Stacey Lee , Rory Power , Tracey Deonn , Meredith Russo , Darcy Little Badger were the GOAT. I can gush about each so much . Power ‘s was like a haunting fever dream, Little Badger was so fun and enjoyable, Lee was sad and fierce and had thematic similaries with Trelease, Lo could be described as Sapphic yearning , Deonn as beautifull and Russo equally tender and monstrous.Russo ‘s story was the most creative and inventive. I never thought of using The little mermaid as a trans fairy tale. So good.
My ratings for each story in at midnight

This was a sweet debut. Women in history are often ignored and forgotten. There were women in battle but media rarely shows it. Kit Sweetly knows this erasure being a history nerd and working at a medieval fast food and entertainment joint. It's nice to see that Jamie Pacton has written about lower income protagonists in both of her YA contemporaries. The struggles being poor brings. I love how friendships and found family is a huge part of this debut, which is a repeated theme in her second book ( lucky girl 5/5) and most likely in her newest one this fall “ the vermillion emporium “- a ya fantasy debut.
Because the book happens in a span of two weeks. Not every side character could be fully fleshed out but you still feel the essence of the characters. The romantic tension and subplot felt believable. Friends to lovers for the win. Jett is such a sweet guy.
Totally read kit sweetly for the tackling gender roles, the friendship dynamics, bits of romance and the desire to eat pancakes right after. Damm I really want
I gave the harness room by l p Hartley. A 3.5It was his only explicitly gay novel. You still had to read between the lines though. You get glimpses of each character ‘s personality but because it's short you barely know them. I'll read more from hartley because his writing is pleasing to read. It was not a weird book but I still don't know what I read . And what was that ending. I was surprised. It totally came out of nowhere. How will the lives of people look like after the ending
Finished howl by Shaun David Hutcherson at 4:50 this morning. It's a solid book. The writing does its job. It's good for people who don't like overly descriptive, beautiful writing. The characters are decently fleshed out, especially Virgil- our lead, Tripp ( actual name Buckley), and Astrid less so. I like the inclusion of high school theater. I didn't understand lycanthropy as a metaphor for sexual assault fully. Hurt people, hurt people?. Go into this book knowing that the horror part is used to illustrate trauma and dealing with emotions surrounding it. It's not a slasher, reading reviews some people thought that. But I'm not going nitpicking into it because Hutcherson has used his own experiences as inspiration and it's a personal book for him. I wished the writing was lusher. I still enjoyed the experience. It's a 4 for me
