The Remaking was an absolute creep-fest! Wholly atmospheric with a writing style that propels you through the pages. The story of Ella Louise and Jessica Ford is eternal, told by word of mouth, through film, and then a podcast - but it was the story of Amber Pendelton haunted by the formidable Ford's that meshed most with me. A child tormented that becomes a woman tortured. Amber's past remains her present, unravels her future, and like all lives touched by the Ford's it's not until their bitter end that they are finally released.
Thank you to @NetGalley and @ClayMcLeod for my copy of The Remaking. This is my honest review.
Well done. A little too cozy for my liking... But something I can say with certainty is that Ravens Hill is the place I want to retire to.
4.5 rolled up to 5
I read this with a lump in my throat....literally. This is a horror story you know and I really enjoyed it, way more than I thought I would...
Laterwas fast paced, direct, and had the throw backs to some of my favorite writings by King. I really enjoyed the way Jamie unravelled the story to us. It called back to Bill from IT and the way he told us the story of what happened that summer. For Jamie he's starting in the Later and goes all the way back to the Then to put a thorough explanation out there for the reader, and the build up that creates is explosive.
Time to settle in....listen to Iris tell you a tale...about a door, one that used to lead somewhere...but now leads somewhere else.
I loved this read... Sutherland writes for the senses, you can smell, taste, hear, touch, and see...most vividly, the beauty and grotesque nature of her prose. This is solidly one of the best written young adult novels I've read to date. Period.
Thanks Alexa and Jen for the recommendation!
I went back and forth so frequently with this book its hard to break 3 stars. I will admit that the ending was a million percent satisfying.
Lovesickness was both eerie and horrific, the story is a common one, town plagued by fog, supernatural happenings. This one tho has a twist that is crazy! Loved every second. When the narrative switched to the siblings tho it lost my interest big time. They were creepy, absolutely, but their story didn't interest me.
I love amanda lovelace's take on poetry and this book was no exception. She excels at telling a story, word by word, she breaks you down and builds you up, and honestly who doesn't need that. When it comes to ‘shine your icy crown' this book is no exception, much like her poetry book ‘break your glass slippers' where she used a ‘fairy godmother', there is a voice that is constantly reminding you of your worth. I wish I could pocket it and take that voice with me.
Thank you Netgalley for this copy of Drowning King by Jennifer McMahon.
This is only the second book Ive read from Jennifer McMahon, but I can say with certainty that:
1. Her writing gets better.
2. The plots get creepier.
The Drowning Kind was emersive not only do you become part of the family in present time, but you also have a sense of time shifting when she reaches you into the past. Not only will this book give you chills, but it will leave you with a sense of foreboding long after youve read the last page.
Didnt mesh with this one. Felt flat, 3 points of view, two timelines, and one voice. The mystery in present was fun to follow and the book has a touch of magic and a satisfying ending. Overall just okay for me.
I had never heard of a bully romance before this popped up in my Goodreads feed, (thanks Astrid), and even though this one also had the stepsibling trope as well I dove in... Curiosity and Cats and all that... Overall it was a bit much I'm all for the misunderstood MC with a dark brooding past, but this guy was a complete dick to this girl! I'm not saying he didn't have valid reasons, kudos to the author on that, but for fox sake give a girl a break.
I have to say I am literally torn, I really enjoyed the authors writing style, she has a good story here, romance, intrigue, mystery. BUT, there was too much
I adore Amanda Lovelace's no holds barred, I'm going to share my grief and my perseverance, point of view in her poetry collections. What was different in this collection was a constant reminder to take the time to care for you, which was summed up in little poems from her very own fairy godmother. The fairy godmother was by far my favorite addition to this collection as she was a constant reminder of your self-worth. I will always gladly read @ladybookmad and would like to personally thank @netgalley for the ARC of this book.
Happily Ever After and Everything in Between was adorable. This is the standard of relationships today, they are comfortable and honest, and they take joy in the simple things. If this reminds you of your relationship I urge you to dig in immediately. This book will make you laugh and will lift your heart.
I also highly recommend Debbie Tung's graphic book - Book Love.
I love this series; it makes a great addition to the Persona world. If you're not familiar with the Persona 5 game, you're still in for a treat, because this book takes the in-depth story of the game and the fabulous art style and combines it into a most excellent manga. I highly recommend it.
This manga was a surprise. It is so insightful, and the message is so much bigger than a manga series. Within these pages, Karen, an ex-idol, is dealing with trauma from an assault at a hand-shaking event. She has shut herself away, changed her name, and her appearance in an attempt to hide from the man who hurt her. She has moved and gone to school under an assumed name and is just trying to be invisible. This all changes of course, and I won't spoil it for you, but in a world where #MeToo has become necessary, this manga brings to light the effects of crass and inappropriate behaviors on women, and even touches on the way women have been brought up to endure this behavior. I'd like to give all my kudos to this author, and I am very much looking forward to reading vol. 2.
I received this as an ARC from @Netgalley, in exchange for my honest review.
