Great start to what looks to be a great series
This was an interesting historical novel. It truly is a work of fiction, but it does capture the imagination.
This is the story of Uhtred who is taken by the Danes at an early age. He is raised to be a Danish warrior. But fate has other plans and England wants him back.
I decided to pick up running again and re-read this book. It is quite good to read what He went through to become an adult athelete. He gives some really good advice. Some of it may be a little outdtaed but the message is clear.
If you are just starting a running program this is a great starting point. Anyone can get into a fitness routine it just take time and a little dedication
This was a really good read and I can see what all the praise is for. I felt a little disappointed by the ending I think I was looking for something more grandious. But I think I feel this way because of the way books are written today with more action.
This is ultimately the story of how Paul Maud-Dib becomes the prophet and becones the ruler of a planet. I am eagerly awaiting the othe books in this series. I do not believe that the main charecters from this book are in future volumes. This is a book about Maud-Dib while the series is about Arrakis.
Great Introduction to Wet Shaving
I really enjoyed reading this book. I am a member of a forum and have looked up many of the topics introduced in this book. It is not the “go to” advice book to answer all your questions. Michael Ham never proposes to me that source. He has included numerous links and sources to get additional information. I really found this book to be a really great introduction to a new hobby. Leisureguy is a real Renaissance man. You you don't believe me? Look at his blog, it is chock full of interesting topics. Thanks Michael
This is a pretty good read. Some of the terms and even the writing style are a little dated. It felt like an old movie from the 30's with the melodramatic style.
But deep I'm that style there is substance. The way the world can evolve around you and if you are too self involved you may never even realize that time is passing you by.
Many of the themes are relevant today as they were 100 years ago. Be kind, be thoughtful, think of other people. Just try to get along.
I think what is so funny about this book is that it treats the past as golden years while today is just dreary. 100 years later you can still relate.
I picked up this book as it was number 100 on the best modern novels. It did not disappoint.
So many negative reviews on this book. It seems everyone was expecting the play. This is more of a character piece than a fantasy novel. I thought it was quite good. But I can see how some may not like this book. Elphaba is the “witch” of the story. More if a loner than anything else. What is interesting is that this book does not give you any answers, just more questions. The book makes you think outside your comfort zone.
After months of reading this book I have finally finished. And I was not impressed. To many new characters and it just did not seem to progress in the 900+ pages. I guess when you kill off most of the main characters in earlier books they need to be replaced. The new characters were just not that interesting and I really did not have the same connecion. I also did not like the chapters having different names rather than the main character. I have enjoyed the first 4 books but this one was more of a chore than a pleasure. Hopefully it will improve in volume
Ok I loved books 1-3, This book seems like a big reset button. Adding new characters giving small characters larger rolls. And skipping some characters altogether. The author has stated this is only half of a much larger book so the next book will have those missing characters. But as I was reading I was wholly confused as it seems he talked about events that were not in the books and often drifts off in some story that did not seem to go anywhere were quite forgettable that when he returned hundreds of pages later you had no idea what I was reading I had to look back. No why did I give this three stars? This is still better than a lot of books that I have attempted to read. Even though it was boring at times and not much happened I still wanted to see what was going to happen next. I have already downloaded the fitfh book and hope to read it soon
The life of the nouveau riche. So self absorbing not a care in the world. The world is theirs and no one else's. Once you dies they leave you to be as you are no longer important At least that is what I got out of this book. If you want you you need to change who you are only to try and impress those you truly do not care for. In the end you you only have you and no one else. Maybe I did get more out of this novel than I thought. It was not bad but not as good as people say it is. Is it perhaps a little dated. This was written before the second world war and the stock market crash. Would the novel been written the same way ten years later? Would we have seen Mr. Gatz in a breadline?
The journey is fun while it lasts with wonderful parties and the lief of luxury. It is quite enjoyable to see how the “better half” lives.
Book two in the series we find Drizzt outside his hometown and trying to find himself. On the way he meets a few friends. His family wants to kill him so the send out his zombie father to do the deed. Does he make it? This is a very light read and sometime you need a quick light read. There is nothing in this book that will change you or the world but is that always required. If you enjoy the DnD world you will enjoy this book. I think it may be time fro me to find something a little heavier for my next read but we shall see.
In the past few years I have started to delve more and more into the world of fantasy. I have picked up many books and just found them wanting in story. Too many hard to read made up names and place. When I first picked up this book I thought oh great another book with impossible to read word. How do you pronounce Drizzt or Menzoberranzan anyways. I have heard of this author before and I have heard this character of Drizzt was supposed to be a good one so I soldiered on. This book is a bit more than I expected the main character is flawed in his society and has a hard time relating to his peers and family. This is the first of a long sereis of Drizzt books and part of an even longer Forgotten Realms series. This is the beginning story of Drizzt from his birth, training, and becoming a supreme fighter. It gives perspective into the Drow society and the dark city if which they live. For fantasy this is quite good reading and I would recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy. This is a Dungeons and Dragons book so if you play the game you most likely already know some of the background. If you are not into the game that is fine too as this explains some of the world.
Overall a good read not great. Will I read the next in the series? Absolutely I enjoyed it but would I recommend to a friend who does not read fantasy I don't think so.
I has to stop reading halfway through. I just couldn't Rea's any more about how the main character is Jewish. It became tiresome. I really tried it just wasn't good as his race/religion just distracted the story.
