A Sorceress Comes to Call

I've only read a handful of books by this author at this point and while I did enjoy this one it isn't my favorite that I've read so far. This is a Goose Girl retelling. I'm not familiar with the original and I don't necessarily thank you need to be to get into this book. I loved the found family vibes. It took me a bit to really be sucked in but overall, it was enjoyable. Maybe not memorable but I'm glad I've read it.

You Can Count On Me

I read the first book in this series last year for the Lost in Romance Book Club that I cohost with my friend Michelle and I'm glad we decided to read the 2nd book in the series this year. This is another single dad MM romance with hurt/comfort vibes. Once again, I thought the romance was super cute and I had this giddy feeling while reading it. It was a bit repetitive at times and we got the characters inner monologue way too much and some things that were said during sexy time was a bit cringe at times. I loved the characters though. Especially Miles' son Bubba. I do have to point out that both Miles and Bubba read younger than they actually were at times. Miles is 29 I believe, and Bubba is 11. Miles has anxiety and the first half of this he barely says a word to Trent. I loved the representation, and I thought it was done really well. I did have some issues with this book but the things I loved made up for the flaws and I really enjoyed it.

Destiny suggested this as a buddy read and I'm always down to buddy read with her no matter what it is. This isn't a book I would have picked up on my own but I'm glad I did read it because I ended up really liking it. This isn't for the faint of heart. This book was a lot. There's murder, rape, abortion really you name it this book probably has it, and the author wasn't afraid to get into the gruesome details. I didn't like how it switched back and forth between past in present or between characters with each chapter. It made it a little hard to stay in the story when you're trying to figure out what characters perspective we are getting. The present chapters were pretty fast paced but when it would switch to telling something that happened in the past it kind of slowed the progress down a little. I liked getting the past chapters, but I feel like they needed to be done differently somehow. Like I said this book was a lot and it was hard to read at times so be sure to check trigger warnings. I'm glad I read this one and I can totally see myself reading more by this author.

A friend of mine recommended this book to me to help me fulfil the “X” prompt in the a to z challenge. She told me ahead of time that she wasn't a fan of it, but I decided to go ahead and read it because it was a short quick read and that's what I needed. It's been a couple days since I've finished this and honestly, I don't have any words. I didn't realize this when I read it, but this is the 2nd book in a series but I'm pretty sure each one follows different couples. This was insta love to the max. I don't normally mind insta love but this was too insta love like to the point where it wasn't believable. It was also a bit repetitive. This kind of read like the author didn't know what she wanted the book to be and all of the aspects of just didn't completely work for me or come off as believable. This just was not for me.

I want to thank the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for my honest review. This is the first book in the start of a new series by this author. We get fake dating, friends to lovers with some humor and a touch of spice. I thought this was a cute romcom. Both characters are flawed but I loved seeing their growth throughout the book. These characters had pretty good communication and it was leading me to believe there wouldn't be a third act breakup but there was. I would have preferred there not be the breakup, but it all worked in the end. I've read several books by this author at this point and have enjoyed them all and I'm looking forward to what some comes out with next.

I started this series last month and really enjoyed my time reading it and wanted to continue on with the series. I don't really have anything else to say about this volume that I didn't already say about the first one. I think the representation is on point. I'm a double amputee myself. I love the illustrations, and I will be continuing on with the next volume. I believe there are 5 in total.

This book was recommended to me to help me fulfill a prompt for the A-to-Z challenge I am doing this year. Is it just me or are Graphic Novels/Manga hard to review? Overall, I enjoyed this one. I like reading zombie books, and all of the ones I've read are pretty much somber, but this one is a fresh take on zombies. This one's more let's say upbeat (even though I don't think that's the right word to use but I can't think of the right one right now). This was a quick read with a great story and illustrations, and I liked the metaphor. My only complaint has to do with the illustrations. Why were a lot of the zombies naked? Like I get clothes rot off or whatever, but this was done in a sexy way and was just weird.

I started this book back in October and it took me until now to finish it. Not because it was a bad book because it wasn't my reading has just been off these last 6 months of the year. I also buddy read this one with Jonny who has been waiting on me to finish it so we can discuss it and post a buddy reads and rants post which will hopefully be coming soon. I didn't realize this was Aiden Thomas' debut novel but man what a debut it was. I loved learning about the Latinx culture. It's something I wasn't really familiar with before picking this up. I really just loved so much about this book it's hard to talk about everything without spoiling it. I only had 2 issues with this book while reading it and they didn't really detract all that much from my enjoyment. I loved Julian from the jump however there were times where his behavior was a bit annoying and a little over the top in my opinion but by the end I loved him so much. The romance!! I didn't know how this would play out and I was fully expecting to get my heartbroken and I did just not in the way I was expecting. I loved the romance with every part of my being, but I felt like it kind of took over the plot. There's a bit of a mystery throughout the book and they are trying to figure out what has happened to the kids who have gone missing but that takes a backseat to the romance plot. I feel like they weren't balanced. That being said I truly loved this book so much and I can't wait to read more by this author.

3.5 stars

This is the last book in the Smythe-Smith Quartet by Julia Quinn and I buddy read this and the rest of the books in this series with Ashley. This one started out good. We know the MMC has to get married quick, and he has a secret. I had no idea what the secret was going to be. Both characters have great communication in the beginning which led me to believe that whatever the secret was the MMC would talk about it with the FMC but that was not the case. He kept putting off telling her until the he had no choice but to tell her and even then, he wasn't the one to come clean. I hated the way the MMC handle this, and I hated him even more after the secret was finally revealed. He started acting in a way that was out of character for him and it just made the whole situation worse. As for the rest I did actually enjoy most of this book. If you took the MMC out of it, it would have been perfect.

Y'all are probably looking at this cover/title thinking this isn't something she would usually read, and you would be correct, but this year I've been trying to step out of my comfort zone a little and read things I wouldn't typically read. When Destiny asked if I wanted to buddy read this one with her, I said yes of course. I didn't go in with any expectations, but I was blown away by this collection of short stories. This is my first book by this author, and it definitely won't be my last. This is a collection of 10 short stories and with the exception of a couple they were all amazing. You have some that didn't feel so much like horror but were still really good. There was one that went completely over my head, one I felt like I needed more from and one that was a little less unbelievable but still good. The rest of them were really good and had me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what was going to happen. Some of them were more on the cute side than horror but still so good and then of course there were some true horror ones. Overall, I really enjoyed this collection of short stories, and I think it's the best one I have ever read.

I got this book through Booktasters on Instagram in exchange for my honest review. When I joined, they sent me links to 6 different books to choose from and I decided to go for this one for 2 reasons. The first being that the synopsis sounded intriguing, and it was the shortest book being offered and I wanted to start out easy. I didn't really go into this one with any expectations, but I am so glad that I ended up enjoying it so much. The epilogue and the prologue are from the present, but the majority of the book is about what happened in 1996. This book tackles a lot of hard topics, and I feel like it was done in a respectful and authentic way. The author did an amazing job of pulling me in and keeping me hooked. It's not often that I read a short book, and I'm fully invested in all of the characters. Usually, I just don't feel like I had enough time with the characters but that was not the case with this book. I was cheering the characters on while reading this and getting my heart broken over and over again. By the end I was in tears. My only complaint and the reason it wasn't a full 5 stars was because of the epilogue and prologue. They didn't flow well with the whole story. They just felt out of place and unneeded to me.

This was the first book I read by this author, but I do have several of her books on my TBR some of which I own in eBook format. This is the first book in a new series, and it was a short quick read coming in at less than 100 pages. This was a fun quick read with some steam and cuteness thrown in. My biggest complaint is that it desperately needed another round or two of editing. I don't expect a book to be without some flaws but when the mistakes are happening so often and taking you out of the story and therefore messing with your enjoyment of the book, I have to mention it. Overall, I thought this was an ok book. While it wasn't a favorite, I will give this author another go.

I read this with the #KeeperofKing group on Instagram this month. I started out physically reading it and I was struggling with it. I was seriously considering DNFing it just a few chapters in, but I was finally able to get the audiobook of it and that helped me a lot. This one ended up just being ok for me. There were so many characters, and I struggled to keep up with who was who especially since it switched between the different characters with each chapter. I wanted to love this one more than I did. If y'all have been following me for a while, then you know I love vampire books so this sounded like something I would love. When it's a fight between humans and vampires I want the humans to at least have a fighting chance but with these vampires the humans literally had no chance. I didn't like McCammon's take on vampires unfortunately and the ending was a big letdown for me.

This is the 3rd book in the Monsters of Alberad series and the best one so far in my opinion. First off what an opening line. That one will stick with me for a while for sure. I love how we did get a little recap on what happened in the first book, but it was short and sweet and to the point. I loved the banter between Natalie, Jaspers and Cole. I pretty much had a permanent smile on my face while reading this. I also got giddy at times reading it. I loved how all 3 of the main characters were confident in the sexuality and knew what they wanted and wasn't afraid to talk about it with each other. If you didn't know this is a why choose MMF romance. It's very steamy which I of course love. This was almost a full 5 star read for me but in the last half I lost that giddy feeling I had while reading the first half. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Run on Your New Legs, Vol. 1

This Manga was brought to my attention by someone in a discord group that I am a part of. Being a double amputee myself I'm always looking for books with this rep, so I immediately put a hold on it at my library and I'm so glad I did because I really enjoyed it. I can't speak on the running with prosthesis rep because I'm not familiar with that, but I can speak on other things that have to do with prosthesis. There were several times while reading this where I was like yes that so accurate like for instance when it talks about trying to get around in crowds while wearing prothesis. It's not easy which is why when I was in school, I was always allowed to leave class 5 minutes early so I could get to my locker and my other class before the bell rings, and everybody was swarming the hole. It was even harder for me because I also had to use crutches so those could easily be kicked out from under me. Anyways that's just one example of where I felt seen for the first time while reading a book. The only thing that I felt weird about was how the prosthetist and the main character meet and start working together. That felt a little sketchy to me but maybe things are done differently in Japan. I've already put a hold on the 2nd vol. and I'm really looking forward to continuing on in the series.

I can't really say a whole lot about this one because it's a short story. When I say short, I mean short. It comes in at only 29 pages. This was offered as an Amazon First Reads extra one month and I ended up picking it because I was familiar with the author, and I was intrigued by the synopsis. Short stories have always been hit or miss for me mainly because I'm always left feeling like I didn't get a full story. I went into this one with low expectations so imagine my surprise when I loved this one. My only complaint is that I wanted more but not in a bad way. I would totally read a full novel of this, and I really wish there was one.

I saw someone talking about this book not that long ago but now I can't remember who it was. I looked up the book and thought it sounded like something I would enjoy plus I've been trying to read more horror this year and thought this would be perfect. By the time I picked this book up to read I had completely forgotten that it was YA. I actually don't mind YA books, but this one bugged me a little bit. Before we go any further this is probably going to be a little bit spoilery so if you are interested in reading this then I suggest skipping the rest of this review. I buddy read this one with Destiny although she did end up DNFing it early on and I can't blame her because I considered DNFing it several times myself. My first thought while reading this was that it was taking way too long to get to the murder. I was about 45% into before anything started happening. My biggest complaint was the use of drugs. I get that they are teenagers (16-17) and they are going to do stuff like this and experiment but when it comes to books about murder, I don't want to read about drug induced paranoia. I want the real thing. Some of the girls were higher than others so luckily, I didn't have to read through everyone's paranoia, but I did have to read a few, and I hated that. I had an idea who the killer was, and I ended up being correct. I will say the author didn't hold back on the gruesome details which I liked. As for the reasoning for the murder spree it was so freaking ridiculous. Oh, you got canceled on social media and don't know what your future holds after high school, so you are going to kill all your friends because they know what they are going to be doing, please. If this book didn't include the drugs and had a better reasoning for the murders, I could have enjoyed it more. I also have to give the author props for continuously getting me to keep reading. Every time I would be considering DNFing it I would read something that made me want to keep reading. After finishing this and reading the synopsis for the next book I don't think I will be continuing with the next book.

This was Octobers pick for the Lost in Romance book club that I cohost with a friend. This book has been on my radar for a while now and I am so glad I finally read it because I absolutely loved it. I loved that we got a cinnamon roll demon who was still very monstrous just not to our FMC. I loved that he was pretty much completely clueless when it came to humans because it made for some laugh out loud moments. This book was just so fun to read, and I can't wait to continue on in the series hopefully sooner rather than later.

There's not a whole lot to say about this book except that I had a great time reading it. It's a very quick read but I do have to say you kind of have to suspend your disbelief with this one. When it comes to Stephen King my ratings are all over the place. I've absolutely loved some of his books I've disliked some of his books and some of his books are just ok to me. This is one of those books where I thought it was ok. This is a collection of 22 short stories. Some were hits and some were misses. There were only 6 stories that I gave higher than 3 stars. I say this every time a review a collection of short stories but most of the time I feel like we weren't given enough and that was the case for a good bit of these stories. There were also some that once I finished them, I was just like what the heck was the point in that? Overall while there were definitely some standout stories this was just an ok collection for me.

This book has been on my TBR for so long so I'm happy to say I've finally read it and I buddy read it with Ali. I think a big part of why I kept putting off reading this book was because of what was being said about it when it was first released. I love books with vampires, and I thought I was going to love this but unfortunately it was just ok. I'm having such a hard time putting into words why this didn't completely work for me. Like there was a lot I liked about it. I loved what little bit of a romance we got as well as the suspense/mystery. I loved the friendships/found family aspect and how Celine could give as good as she got. I was intrigued enough to want to continue to the end but at the same time I was kind of bored. The story kind of dragged for me and I wanted more of actual vampires. Also, we needed more foreshadowing because as it is we got absolutely nothing that would lead us to suspect the person(s) it ended up being. All in all, I think I just needed more to fully love this book. I do plan on reading the next book and I'm hoping that one will be better than this one was for me.

You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight

This was my 100th book read this year so that means I've completed my reading goal for this year with 2 months to spare. This book was recommended to me by a friend in a Discord group I'm a part of. I have seen this book around and I was interested in reading it but I tend to reach for romance over everything else, so I never picked this one up until now because October 2024 is the month I decided I was finally going to read books I don't normally pick up. I ended up buddy reading this one with another friend DB and overall, we both enjoyed it. I can't talk about this book without some minor spoilers so if you haven't read this one yet then please don't read any further. The first thing that stuck out for me when I started reading it was how much the characters were aware of all the stupid things people do in scary movies. This continued on throughout the book which I loved. Of course, they did some stupid stuff to but when they did, they were aware what they were doing was stupid, but it was the only option they had. Things don't really start to happen until we are about 40% into the book. I didn't see any of the plot twists coming even though I probably should have. There was a cult introduced in the book and that just seemed to come out of nowhere. I wish that there would have been more backstory on them because as is it just felt random and unneeded. I also wish that more of the murders would have actually happened on page. Now for the ending. I liked the ending but at the same time I'm not the biggest fan of open endings. I don't like being left with questions. I don't won't to interpret how I think things went after the ending the author leaves us with. While I did have some minor complaints overall this was a really enjoyable read.

I was buddy reading this one with Destiny, but she ended up DNFing it about halfway through. Honestly, I don't remember much about the first half of the book since I read that almost 5 months ago now. Overall, I did like this and the series overall but at the same time I'm just glad I can finally say I finished it. I don't really have much else to say about this one. I just need to read the graphic novels and one of the short stories and I can call this series complete.

I read the 1st book in this series back in July and really enjoyed it so I was excited to the ARC for this one. If you've read the first book, then this book starts off where the group of 10 women are already on the island and it goes from there. In the first 6 chapters we are basically reading the same thing that happened in book one, but we get it from Florence and Adelbert's points of view seeing as how I read the first book not too long ago it felt like I was reading the same thing. I like that there was a recap of what happened in the first book, but I think it needed to be cut down a little. Adelbert is an Elf and a grumpy one at that, but I liked seeing him thaw little by little throughout the book. Florence has some corny jokes throughout the book, but it was kind of cute of funny. We immediately know that Florence is attracted to Adelbert and vice versa but whereas Florence isn't opposed to a relationship Adelbert is for the majority of the book. Did I mention this was a slow burn romance? Well, it is. I wanted them to get together for so long and I loved the moment when it finally happened. The only thing I wish we would have gotten was a little more of Adelbert's pining. There was a scene toward the end where Florence stood up to someone for Adelbert and I was so excited when that happened because I was hoping it would. Overall, another really good installment in this series and I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.
