Entertaining adventure story. I didn't think the parts about the author's journey into the Amazon added much to the more interesting historic account. I also didn't enjoy the frequent hopping across the timeline. At times I was a bit confused.
This book is so dramatic! If you're looking for a good quick read inspired by medical history this is nice. The plot gets very confusing at times and the characters are none too interesting.
If you like the podcast Sawbones you'll probably like this book. All those good medical history facts and stories with a few jokes thrown in.
3.5. A delightfully surprising read. I didn't know much about the book before starting it and I'm pretty displeased with most fairy tale retellings after the Lunar Chronicles. But this book made me very optimistic for YA in general. Instead of focusing on the evil Queen and misunderstood princess tropes, it presented to very complex, well-defined characters who are often forced into making choices based on the decisions and manipulation of the men in their lives. I don't want to spoil the ending but I was thrilled with the way the conflict resolved, something I would have never envisioned a YA book presenting. The action can be slow at times but with reading if you want to be exited for the genre again.
Really engaging story. The pacing was great and the action was well written. Zhao and Daiyu were complex characters that grew throughout the story and I felt the romance developed pretty naturally and realistically. I'd be interested in learning more about the other characters in the book and learning about the heist from their perspective, especially Lingyi and Iris :).
Tear-jerking and powerful novel from a perspective we never hear in news coverage about police involved shootings.
A captivating mystery story. Yes the characters are pretentious. And the world is unrealistic. The story does drag in places. But overall well done and one of the few dark academia books I was able to get through.
Wow. Not what I expected from a zombie novel. Jane and Katherine are very compelling characters and the post-Civil War world of this zombie apocalypse holds your attention. I love that the author dug into the racial politics of the world instead of presenting the civil war as having saved Black people from racism. I also like that romance wasn't a focus but the growing friendship between Jane and Katherine as they learn to survive the world together and rely on each other's skills.
Exciting story with compelling characters. Love the inclusion of Chinese culture and folklore.
This may be an unpopular opinion but I enjoyed the second novela much more than the first. I felt like I had a better sense of who Binti is and her struggles and the world. The pacing kept me interested.
Entertaining read. Hooks you in the first few chapters and gets you wanting to know what's next. Parts are confusing because the action moves too quickly.
A wonderful and accessible look at medical history through the eyes of one health care institution. No medical degree required to enjoy!
A concise book of quotes meant to put you in a zen mood.Very good for people who are into quotes not very good for people interested in learning more about zen or Buddhism.
This installment of The Diviners didn't disappoint. There characters grew more individually and started finally acting as a powerful group of superheroes. We got deep into the mystery of Project Buffalo. Cannot wait to see what happens next!
I didn't finish this one. I found the story slow and confusing. I re-read almost half the book hoping I'd get into it again but the lack of character development or interesting plot left me annoyed.
I thought the tidbits she included about her life were much more interesting than the book itself. Perhaps read a biography, autobiography or memoir about her. She's a fascinating lady and very forward thinking for her time.
