I love a good murder mystery being solved by amateur detectives. This book was decent: a fun read with unexpectedly diverse characters but not too much depth or intrigue. Definitely not the psychological thriller of Ripper by Isabel Allende. I found the characters a little unbelievable and was a little confused by how old the main and minor characters were. I was also pretty icked by how many adults wanted to have relationships with these teenagers but (no spoilers) it also ends up being a main plot point.
The world in this book was pretty interesting and left me wanting to know more. Many YA books don't spend any time creating a world. With such a great setting great setting I was very disappointed in the plot. a rebel royal taking back their throne is so overdone and added nothing to the story. I wanted to root for Amani in her fight to create a life outside of the patriarchy but she simply didn't grow enough as a character besides getting magical powers. Also, like most YA books, the romance was boring and only there because it's required for the genre.
Very interesting and a quick read. His story is very amazing and provided me with a lot of hope for the rehabilitation of non-violent offenders through alternative sentencing programs.
The first 100 or so pages of this book were a challenge for me to get through. The characters were incredibly unlikeable. I understand this was the author's intent. However, my dislike for the characters made me want to ditch the book. When you aren't able to devote a ton of time reading - why bother. Switching to the audiobook made it much easier to get through because the performances were so compelling. That's the power of audiobooks - they can make the story better. And after reading through the first twist I really wanted to know what happens next. The rest of the book until the last few chapters is great. However, the ending was a bit of a letdown. The story just seemed to fade out.
I have avoided reading this book for a long time because I heard how popular it was. Its popularity is well deserved. A thoroughly enjoyable read perfect for the summer, vacations, or just some light-hearted easy science fiction reading.
I had no expectations for this book and it absolutely blew me away. Beautifully written and an amazing story.
Julia Child's endearing story about love, life, France and cooking. Ultimately more interesting than “Julie and Julia”.
Wonderful and magical piece about the interlocking lives of three characters, told through stories collected by a lighthousekeeper and his apprentice
I struggled to get into the book but I greatly enjoyed the middle then lost interest towards the end. Virginia Woolf has a lot more compelling books.
A good collection of feminist writings from the 60s and 70s. I've read a lot of feminist essays and thought I understood what feminism was at that time. I learned so many new things.
Incredibly interesting. This book discusses the widest scope of the fast food world combining political science, history, sociology and investigative journalism.
