Entertaining story. Fast paced read with few surprises. A generally good regency romance.
While not every book needs a happy ending to be good, this ending felt a little rushed and felt a bit like, “I've lost everything so I guess I'll just give up.” Kind of like a dramatic high schooler who just broke up with their first boyfriend. Nothing else matters so whatever.
Enjoyed the overall plot of the novel. Was not at all what I expected from reading the blurb on the back cover. The blurb talked a lot about the plague and the unique nature of their blood that keeps them safe from the plague but causes them to be hunted even though this was a very small part of the book. Enjoyable read.
Entertaining read with some twists and turns I didn't expect. I wish there was more explanation for Painter's world and the nightmares but I liked how the relationship between Yumi and Painter was developed. I also wish there had been some deeper connections to the Asian background that was heavily implied. Might be some ignorance since I am not super familiar with that culture but I think a bit more information would have been nice. Especially for someone with not a lot of background.
It was an intriguing read that held me up until the end but the overall story arc was predictable. The ending itself felt like the story spiraled a bit out of control and a bit too reactive for my taste. The actions and reactions seemed rash without background or really anchored in the careful base of the story.
Entertaining read with pretty good pacing even to the end of the book. While many aspects were predictable, the story and writing were good enough to hold my attention. Not too deep or complex but a really solid structure.
I didn't love it but I didn't hate it either. I didn't love that the main character took so many risks and did some illegal things only to be congratulated for a job well done. I didn't love the rushed and convoluted ending. I thought the ending speech was a bit cliche. I did like the overall mystery and the romance was alright even though it was a bit cliche as well.
It was very engaging and a fun twist on the history of the war. It was sweet and emotional all the way through. Enjoyed seeing it through the eyes of a child.
It felt like an overly simplistic view of polygamy with an ending that just tied everything up in nice little bows asking us to look past some major issues and instead focus on what is probably the least problematic aspect of the entire story.
Excellent novel from the point of view of an autistic individual as he struggles to understand the world around him. Great balance of internal reflection and action that engages the reader. The author truly pulls you into Marcelo's world in a unique and powerful way.
It was a hard read but very worthwhile. It is hard to fathom the atrocities the characters faced but it was also full of hope as it taught some very valuable lessons about humanity.
Really hard to get into if you had not read the other books by the author. The concept was intriguing but I might have to come back to it with more background. Not enough context to be a true stand alone.
Liked this one better than the second book in the series. There were a few points where the science got a little too sciency for my understanding and I found myself skipping past some of the quantum stuff.
Entertaining read which kept you on your toes until the end. Nice cliffhanger to get you to read the next book.
Hard to get into and there was a lot of world building and context, especially at the beginning. Overall an intriguing story and makes you want to read the next book. I will say the ending was a bit confusing.
Reading this book gave me a heavy sense of deja vu which means I have either read the book before and don't remember or it was very similar to something else I had read. Either way, not one of my favorites.
I enjoyed it up until the ending which I felt kind of fell flat compared to the rest of the book.
I read the re-released version as it was the only option at my library and it was very off-putting. Some of the references were updated to “appeal to modern audiences” but in all honesty they still seem out of touch with teenagers today. Overall it was a quick read, not too deep or complicated. Great if you need a book to read while on vacation but nothing that will really suck you in.
Enjoyable read that was paced well. Not a major plot but the internal journey of healing was entertaining enough to make up for the fact that the external story was lackluster.
It was fairly straight forward. I was not overly surprised at the ending but it still held my attention and kept me reading. Overall a well written book.
Puppets come to life and kidnapping were not appealing to me and I did not get into the book quick enough to hold my attention.
Entertaining and fast-paced. There wasn't really a plot twist though so no surprises there.
I am honestly not sure what I even just read but I think it was good. Not sure on that point either. Overall an intriguing book but very convoluted with no obvious story arc. It felt a little bit like a dream where ideas and scenes are just barely tied together combined with a distracted child's ability to tell a story. You get to the end and you have no idea how you got there and are left wondering what the point even was.
The writing was simply mid tier, with several places that it felt like the author was trying too hard to appeal to teenage boys without really knowing how they actually talk. Felt a little stereotypical. The romance was very basic and also a bit stereotypical. It does make you want to read the next book but only because there are so many unanswered questions from the first book. There were also several plot points that seemed too convenient rather than worked into the story. Like his mind pictures that he can conveniently do without really any explanation or practice. Or when other people discover they have powers just in the nick of time.
