I really looked forward to reading this book and appreciate how the author set the story as taking place within a Mormon community. Ultimately, however, I wasn't that interested in the characters and didn't find the story or “mystery” compelling.
Enjoyable start to this series. More humorous than expected. Will continue with the next installment.
This book pulled off something very unique for me...it was suspenseful and humorous at the same time. The main character is very self-absorbed. The extent of this and details of his life are slowly revealed as the story progresses. The tension continues to ramp up as we discover more about this character and his life. I listened to the audiobook version and it was well done and an enjoyable ride.
I really enjoyed this book. The story was fast-paced and interesting. The characters were well drawn and fleshed out. I'm looking forward to the next one in the series. Highly Recommend!
3.5 stars. Good storytelling but I found that I was confused at some points and felt the book could have been a little shorter. Solid enjoyable read with more fantasy elements than expected.
This was an enjoyable read that held my interest. The premise, characters and setting pulled me in right away. I wanted some loose ends tied up as I approached the last chapters of the book, which never came. Thus, I found the ending a bit unsatisfying but overall would recommend the book.
I loved this book! It was a combination of all of my favorite genres. The story involves solving a mystery that takes place in a fantasy world. There is also political intrigue and a host of interesting characters. Highly recommend this one!
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the digital ARC.
I really enjoyed this book. Stephen King is a great writer and this novel had all of the things that I love...an interesting plot, well-developed characters, nice pacing, and a satisfying ending. If you like suspense, check this book out. I am moving on to the next in the Bill Hodges Trilogy.
This book was a mixed bag for me. I enjoyed the main character and laughed out loud a few times while reading. There were other times, however, where I found myself bored and wishing that the story was less predictable and would move at a faster pace. If you like humorous, light-hearted contemporary fiction, give this one a try.
Wow, another great read from Karin Slaughter. The 1970's was a fantastic setting for this gritty cop novel. The prevailing attitudes and culture of the time were very integral to the story. I loved the well-developed characters and fast-paced storytelling.
I have been hearing great things about this book and decided to listen to the audio version. It did not disappoint. It was very creepy and atmospheric and gave me some Walking Dead vibes. I enjoyed the alternating storytelling between the past and the present as well as an ending that was more satisfying than I expected after reading other reviews. Highly recommend for lovers of suspense or horror.
I really enjoyed this book! I don't read a lot of science fiction but was happily surprised when I got into this story and realized how character driven it was. I have affection for every character and was impressed with the author's imagination. I did have trouble visualizing some of the tech/space aspects of the story but did not find that this made me lose interest in the book at all.
Thanks to the publisher for an advanced digital copy of the book.
Page turner, especially if you like mysteries involving the Catholic church, the gospels and religious icons. I sometimes had difficulty completely understanding the characters' motivations, but the story was engaging nonetheless.
Satisfying mystery, though I found it a bit slow at times. I love the characters of Strike and Robin and am jumping into the next book right away. I recommend it for mystery lovers that don't require a fast paced plot.
Loved this book. Interesting characters, engaging plot and wonderful writing weave a moving tale that I won't soon forget. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys literary fiction.
I had high expectations for this book due to all of the positive reviews and felt a little let down by it. It was interesting enough to keep reading but I never connected with the main character. The ability to travel to different worlds is a concept that always interests me, but wasn't fully utilized in this story.
This is the sequel to The Life We Bury, and I enjoyed it more than the first book, which was also good. It has great characters and a compelling storyline. If you like character-driven mysteries, give these titles a try.
