This is a beautifully written and harrowing story of twin experiments during WWII. These events and characters will be etched in my mind and heart for a long time. Highly recommend.
3.5 stars. Good read that focuses on several women going through transitions in their lives. Reminds us that we don't know why things happen and how the future changes in unexpected ways based on the choices we make now combined with random events. Entertaining and interesting without being too heavy or deep.
3.5 stars. This is a grisly, gritty crime novel that enjoyed quite a bit. The writing was good, I liked the main character and the different settings where the story took place. I did think that the plot became convoluted and that the pacing was off. Both of these things made the story lose momentum for me at times.
Overall, I recommend this book to people who like crime novels and don't mind reading gruesome details of murders. I plan to continue on with the Charlie Parker series.
4.5 stars. Odd and crazy premise, but I loved the story. Interesting, entertaining and moving...an enjoyable book.
The Hunter by Tana French is a compelling mystery novel that delves into the hidden depths of a close-knit Irish community. While some prior knowledge of the series opener, The Searcher, might enhance certain references, French expertly crafts a standalone story that allows new readers to dive right in.
The narrative unfolds at a steady pace, drawing the reader into the small-town atmosphere with immersive prose. Cal Hooper, the retired cop from Chicago, takes a backseat in this installment. Instead, the story revolves around an ensemble cast of residents, each with their own secrets and motivations. This shift in focus might not appeal to everyone who enjoyed Cal's central role in the first book.
French's talent for character development shines through. The townspeople become almost tangible, their struggles and complexities interwoven into the fabric of the mystery. The novel could be classified as a literary mystery, as it prioritizes character exploration alongside the central whodunit.
The Hunter is a captivating read for those who appreciate intricate characters and a strong sense of place. However, readers seeking a fast-paced, action-driven thriller might find the deliberate pacing a touch slow. Fans of the first book will likely find this sequel enjoyable, but the focus on the town itself over Cal might leave some wanting more from the retired detective.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the digital ARC.
I liked this book but would say that it isn't for everyone. The writing is wonderful and the characters are well developed. That being said, the story does move slowly and the ending wasn't as good as I wanted it to be considering the amount of time put into getting there.
3.5 stars. I didn't enjoy it as much as Wool, but am going to continue to with Dust! Enjoyable series overall so far.
I have to admit that I had some laugh out loud moments reading this book. However, Bridget's constant neurotic rambling became tiresome about halfway through the book and overshadowed the wittiness that I enjoyed in the writing.
This book reads like historical fiction. It has too many errors in it to be taken seriously as a scholarly piece of research. Disappointing read.
Loved the characters and the story was well paced and held my interest. I look forward to the next one in the series.
Loved the writing and the disturbing, multifaceted story told in this book. It pulled me in from the beginning and held my interest through to the last page.
I have heard great things about the series, so I plan to continue on even though I wasn't blown away by this installment. The characters and world are interesting. The plot was okay. I loved the beginning but felt that the second half dragged.
I really enjoyed this book. It pulled me in right away and kept me turning the pages. Highly recommend!
This story was a 3.5 read for me. The world was unique and interesting to discover. The characters were well drawn out and I was invested in their story right away.
I found this short story to be theme-heavy, as if the author wanted to explore a lot of areas in a short amount of story-telling. The writing was concise and there are beautiful, heartfelt sentiments throughout.
I would recommend this to readers who enjoy exploring unfamiliar sci-fi worlds and themes of community and belonging.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an ARC of this book.
3.5 Stars...I enjoyed this book and am happy that I am getting to read some classic fantasy. It entertained me enough to want to continue on in the series. I am hoping that the world and characters continue to evolve and become more nuanced as the series progresses.
This book was physically much larger than I expected and the art is gorgeous. The story is minimal and secondary to the illustrations. I was even more impressed when reading the afterward and understanding the process by which this visual novel was made. Highly recommend!
