Silent Kill - Maeve 8.5, takes place between Cruel Acts and The Cutting Place. This short novella told from the perspective of Georgia is probably closer to a 3.5 but I was so happy to be back in this world so I rounded up. Still not a fan of Georgia, despite the insight into her life. As per usual when it ended I was left wanting more Maeve and Derwent. Definitely recommended at the $2.99 kindle price.
2024 reread, bumping this down to a 3. It definitely felt much more childish and simplistic to me this time but am I still eager to read on? Ugh, yes.
Original 2015 review:
This was pretty damn good. Maybe even 4.5. I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I did The Queen of the Tearling, but especially after reading The Red Queen (sooo very boring), this stands out as very well written and structured amidst so many similar YA books out right now.
My least favorite of all her books- and yet she's still one of my favorite authors. I did not like the snakes one bit and I felt that it was far too easy to suss out the ending. Now I just have to wait for Dead Scared to come out this summer...and I am not looking forward to the wait.
3.75 - cheeky, twee, too long, and yet I couldn't stop listening. Ugh. On to the next.
Started off poorly but picked up speed about 75 pages in. I came pretty close to DNF'ing but I'm glad I didn't.
I had really high expectations going into this after seeing so. much. hype, but I found the writing to be incredibly simplistic and flat. Heavy on the telling, minimal showing. By all rights I should have loved this book but it was an absolute slog.
4.5 - it's clear Fonda Lee is an exceptional writer, and a genius at world building as well. I most likely will be continuing the series but good lord that took me so so so long to read. Super dense.
