I adore this book. It was a very well written history and personal observances on a topic that I have been aware of in my life. Very well read and researched. Deep enough to make you think about life while practical in its presentation of history and other facts. Flowed nicely.
Little books like this irk me at first. $18 for such a small page/dollar ratio. But, this one was worth every penny. I firmly believe I'll be rereading this one in the future. Reminding us that everything is from and in Christ is a necessary, daily need. I really like the theology here. Some theologians stretch metaphors and develop their own language. This book stayed grounded, coherent, and comprehensive. I ordered it due to a recommendation list and now add my personal recommendation to it.
I love this book. But, it gets tedious. You feel like you're living each day of Luther's life. But that gets dull after awhile. The last chapter seems a bit grand of what Luther ushered in but Luther legacy does exist and is impressive.
I adore this book. I learned a lot and happen to own a few mentioned and have read quite a bit more. This book is art and it does a fantastic job demonstrating books as art and as history setting and changing items, too.
I enjoyed this. This is my first to read of the series. As a graphic novel, I liked its pace and it actually had a lot go on. I never felt it was talking down to kids. I liked that all the characters had faults.
A heavy story that has a lot of production challenges. I like the twists. I almost want to say 3 stars but I felt the timing was so well written.
I can read a children's book in a child's mindset. But, I didn't understand the passionate love for this book. The app experience help me up the rating.
I found this a play commenting on many aspects of our need for both knowledge of others and self-knowledge. Farce/satire is difficult for its timing and clarity are essential to be properly enjoyed and understood. I personally wouldn't produce this play because there are too many moments of needing to write the play for your circumstance or get permissions from others. I owuld like to see it.
I wanted to like this book based off other reviews. But, it was more autobiography than about shopping malls. Almost half of it could be torn out and still tell the author's biography and the mall life. More facts or points of interests about other malls would have been nice even with the fact that the mall he constantly discusses does have a very eventful history, albeit tragic. I skimmed the second half. Disappointed.
This book has a lot in it. Yet, read in a half-hour. I see why so many references made to it: “adults don't understand” “they need things explained” “rushing everywhere” “look inside.” I also see why it wasn't in my childhood library - it's complex, about questioning authority and what is death. My parents would have never given this to us if they had seen it. And definitely not in school. For a kids book, it is too symbolic at times. Plus, too many big words for a kids book.
I received this book for free through LibraryThing. I could only get into the second story and had to stop. The first story I loved but it was laborious to even get to it (since I read everything before hand). The second story was also laborious to get to but then also was too much to read. The labor is in all of the explanations and setups. If a story cannot stand alone, it is not written well. And the second story with its multiple lines, bracketed word definitions that did not seem to feed into the story, the story's flow was too interrupted. That's why people use italics and a glossary. That is poor editing. If this much poetry to setup a story is common elsewhere, it does not fit my preferred reading style. Even then, I did not see or understand fully the connections between the poetry and the stories. I expected stories not poetry.
I would recommend this to someone confused by the Book of Revelation. Clear and concise. Positive and up-front. AND it had the scripture in the book. It never said which or whose translation but it was nice having it fully in the book.
I hadn't understood all that Helen had done. There is so much focus on her childhood due to the play and movie that her own abilities and accomplishments have been easily dismissed. She did a lot especially since she was able to get the support she received.
This one was too absurd. Too many red herrings. And the getting engaged and wedding were bizarre. The murder mystery was well done - take everything else out, very good book, because I can only handle so much comedy of the absurd. I did a lot of skimming through parts that were not necessary.
Personal note: I'm taking a break from these but my parish has four more and hope to check them. This is the problem with series, they blow up parts and get tedious.
I liked it. I did skip a bug chunk as I felt every thought Siobhan was having was getting old. But it has a sweetness and lightness to it. I am not sure if I'll check out later stories yet but it was a full 5-stars for this genre.
Reread: How could I forget such a major thing? I forgot most of this book since this is probably only my second read. But Dumbledore dying?! I forgot THAT! I cared too much for the characters that I blocked it? That is good writing.
I feel this book did get a bit too long but it is still a full 5 stars. If only Harry had remembered....
I can't put my finger on why I couldn't get into this book. I love Rick and his work. I have had my issues with depression. I watched the movie “Matters of the Heart” and that seemed to be all I needed. I guess I didn't need the specifics. I understood the story from the pictures and skims I did with the book and from the movie.
This is a good introduction to the variations of modern art that are still strong today. I have felt certain art pieces to be “ridiculous” but this helped me to see the varied emphasis of the different styles. I sub-textually saw the evolution and variation of human thinking and perspective.
Awesome! Details and behind-the-scenes with honesty and integrity (no scandelous bs). Pictures and fun with fantastic footnotes. I cannot follow fast rapping (due to hearing issues); this book let's me see and hear the show without the actually seeing it. I've listened to some songs and watched what was shown on-line when the cast performed at the White House, plus, the 60 Minutes piece and PBS special. I have seen and heard enough that this book let me watch it while learning much about the creative process. Very well done book.
I love this book. All seminarians should read it. Insights on the Psalms, prayer, confession, etc. are succinctly stated. There wasn't time to write the full treatise and for this, it was for the better. I feel this could be lived as a way of life for all Christians, for the whole church, as he states in the Preface. I hope to read more by Bonhoeffer; I am enjoying the biography about him.
Each drawing is clear and detailed. I like that each drawing is explained. Since it is non-fiction, reading dry and slow at times but there is a lot of information in the book.
