I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read. At first I thought it was going to read like stereo instructions (the word “handbook” scares me), but it was a really nice narrative. It follows John Lago, orphan turned drug mule turned assassin. Most of the story is about his “last job” before retiring from the assassin business at the “ripe age of 25.”
Over the course of the book, I grew really attached to John, and loved his relationship with Alice. The last few chapters were a total surprise twist, but I liked that direction it took. The very end was left a little open ended, which I did NOT like. But overall, it was a great novel.
I really enjoyed this manga! The art is beautiful. The story was really sweet in the beginning, then got a little complicated towards the middle, and the end kinda frustrated me since it was left a little open ended. I know this is based on a film, and I cannot wait to watch it. I just wish there was more to this story!
At first, I thought this story was going to be very Hunger Games-esque... but ended up being much different. It follows Heather and Dodge, two high school seniors who both come from broken, dysfunctional families. They enter a game that graduating seniors can play, called Panic. Panic is a series of dangerous challenges, and the last person standing gets the pot, which is a whopping $67,000.
I really liked Lauren Oliver's writing, but the story, especially the character relationships, were really predictable. A quick, enjoyable read.
this book was really cute. the dynamics between sisters is relatable, as is the “girl crushing on the new guy who turns out to be a total skeez” thing. I knew from the very beginning how it would end, but that's probably because I've read too much teen fiction in my life, and they pretty much all tend to end like this book did. one character overcame an obstacle, and the couple that was hinted in the beginning ended up together at the end. overall, it was pretty well written, funny, and a good read. and it makes me wanna hug my sister.
I actually really likes this one. I haven't read Beastly, but I've heard good things, so I figured Cloaked would be good too. I didn't technically “read” it since I listened to the audio book, but it still counts right? I enjoyed the combination of fairy tales that Alex Flinn incorporated into Cloaked, some of which I was unfamiliar with, but it was still pretty cool. because it was the audio book, the accents were totally silly, especially the swans' and the park ranger guy. a few things were predictable, but it was a very enjoyable book!
I really wanted to like this book. unfortunately, it was incredibly slow paced and it felt like nothing really happened, even after 100 pages in. I liked the overall premise of the book, but the writing was boring and couldn't keep my attention. I could only read 4-6 pages before falling asleep or getting so bored that I had to put it down. DNF.
I thoroughly liked this book! it had a nice twist on the Cinderella story. I enjoyed figuring out the parallels, but it also made the book pretty predictable, which is why I gave it 4 stars. I totally called the big plot twist at the end when I was less than 100 pages into the book. other than being predictable, I liked the writing and I will be continuing the series!
I really loved the premise of this book. it was so well written. this is the first of Joe Hill's that I've read and I would consider reading his other works.
the only problem I had with this book was the somewhat disjointed sections of flashbacks and switches of perspective. having about 200 pages in the main character's perspective and then a sudden switch to 50 pages of the antagonist's perspective was a little confusing at first, and honestly a little annoying. it did give a lot of information for the plot, though, which was definitely needed.
overall, a very enjoyable read. I can't wait for the movie!
Although the switches between the written story and the drawn story confused me at first, as the book progressed, I started to make connections. This book is beautifully written and illustrated, as to be expected from Mr. Selznick. I will definitely be adding this one to my list of books to buy and read to my future children.
