Cute characters, but the story does not feel fully fleshed out. The words are repetitive (I hope I never read the phrase “carriage house” again), and the dialogue is chunky and off. Seems to refer to things that have never been referenced or refence things as happening for the first time more than once. It's just awkward. Feels like a draft.
This is the most upsetting book I think I've read. It's a difficult topic to write on, but Mihalic does it with grace. We see how Roan thinks and watch the changes in how she speaks to herself. I wish the ending were different and I wish she'd made different choices, but I was drawn-in the entire way through.
Somewhat slow, and also at times hard to read due to my own struggles with chronic illness and the medical gaslighting that comes with it. Overall a good read, though.
The Queen's Gambit is interesting; I like Beth's character and the writing style. I like how addiction is accurately portrayed, and am impressed with the authors ability to understand chess well enough to write this. I cannot picture chessboards in my head as clearly as Beth, though, so I mostly skimmed her descriptions of gameplay. Tevis touches on some important topics like feminism, racism, and class, but doesn't expand in any meaningful way...it's just there. The book doesn't have a real climax, everything feels the same the entire way through.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, regardless.
My main complaint, and something I'm glad the Netflix adaptation leaves out (Spoiler:) is the unusual and out of place sexual content in the beginning of the novel. She is a child. He writes of her sexual assault in gross detail, and then it has absolutely no impact on her or the book whatsoever. It ruins the character of Jolene, who she continues to idolize. He implies that Jolene and Fergussen have a relationship, when he is of college age and she is 13, ruining another character. It was just really gross and uncomfortable to read especially from an adult man's writing. Why was it included??
Thoroughly enjoyed throughout the book. At first I found the wording pretentious but it suits the narrator perfectly, and I'm glad it didn't stop me from reading. Had a good few wide eyed moments reading this one. I'm new to horror so I don't know how it compares, but I'd rate this more a fun read than a serious one
Arend writes vampires without making them super cheesy. The world-building was well done. We learn with Dillon, without it ever being info-dumped. The only struggle I had was remembering the look/personality of all the characters. I really really enjoyed this book.
I really enjoyed this read, the take on vampires is cool and I like Shori. I like the way it's written, but there's some typos??? I'm also a little sketched by the slight pedo vibes happening.
I like Starling's character a lot. I came at this book not knowing the story, just the name. It wasn't what I expected, definitely thought it'd be more gruesome. Sadly I think Criminal Minds is to blame for desensitizing me to this book.
Interesting. Draws you in. Sometimes confused, but I appreciate the unique writing style used. I'm not quite satisfied with the end.
This is my first king Arthur story I've read. I did a lot of googling words (especially birds???) but I really enjoyed it. Beautiful story, and a quick read!
Foe is a quick read, it drew me in and kept my attention the whole way through. It's interesting and there's tension without it being too heavy. I found the writing to be interesting and thought out well. Basically, it's about what it means to be alive and living.
Wow. Recently I've been reading horror novels back to back, and I've gotta say this book has been the most suspenseful. In trying to read it, so many of my own obsessions and compulsions were triggered that I almost had to do the CBT along with her. I'm relieved that it's over and glad that I read it. Back to something calmer now.
This totally freaked me out. Was way more intense than other books I've read this year. Left me satisfied but definitely disturbed. Plus there was some cool writing choices that made the story more interesting to read.
I LOVED this book. It had me hooked from the beginning (and from the font haha). I didn't expect the mix of mental health and fairies. This book was definitely written for me and people like me. I really related to the main character for better and for worse. Wonderful book.
