Free at last
What a sad yet colorful life Leila had. She deserves all the love of her five.
So long story short, I didn't like it.
And what put the nail in the coffin was Toru sleeping with Reiko and I quote:
“as if it were the most natural thing in the world for us to do”
Uh... no it's not??????????
Didn't like how the female character were written. And that's on period.
A lot of braincells are needed to consume this. Not an easy read for sure.
“defamiliarization; of zooming in so close to something, and observing it so slowly, that it begins to warp, and change, and acquire new meaning”
Read this for the book club I recently joined.
First few chapters bored me. The back and forth POVs in different years was hard to get used to.
A lot of unnecessary clues and subplots scattered across the book that didn't lead anywhere.
Not mad at the plot; it was a great concept.
The last chapter could be the whole book and that would have been fine.
That ending was chef's kiss
Ms Christie you have outdone yourself. I will never ever forget the loud gasp I let out after reading and rereading that ending.
I am stunned. I am out of words. Just wow.
Giraud thought he slayed lol
My highlights
“Arrange your ideas. Be methodical. Be orderly. There is the secret of success.”
...“the unconscious recoil of the mind against originality.”
“It is love that has come—not as you imagined it, all cock-a-hoop with fine feathers, but sadly, with bleeding feet.”
That's the truth. I didn't kill Gabriel. He killed me.
All I did was pull the trigger.
I had really high expectations from this book as I've been meaning to read it but sadly, it didn't give that way I wanted it to give. Was it me? Is it because I've read too much Agatha Christie and I'm expecting it to be that?
Alicia talked. I kinda wish she didn't. That'd be sooo smart to reveal Theo's involvement while still keeping the plot's uniqueness (her not talking). Kind of a let down cuz that was def one of the book's selling point and I was expecting a big brain tactic from the author to preserve this.
Theo quickly found his way onto my suspect list. I knew there was something about his character that suggested he was more involved in the murder. Around halfway through the book I kinda clocked that and was, at this point, just waiting for the big reveal. Unfortunately for me, the ‘big' reveal was not as ‘wow' as I expected it to be.
It's veeerrryyy sad that I can't stop comparing this to Christie. That is on me and I apologize.
Nevertheless, I wasn't able to put down this book the moment I started reading it and for that I give my kudos to the author. If you are new to thriller books, I'm sure you would enjoy this.

This is was surprisingly good.
What annoyed me tho is mentioning the characters full names every other time. Soooo unnecessary but okay.
Andy deserved a much more gruesome death but I'll take it.Nina and Millie, such strong women — bravo!
Might read the next book. Might not. Let's see.
Nope this murderous couple does not deserve that happy ending.
All their excuses for killing those ppl were petty and immature.
So no. I do not agree. Justice for Dr. Hale!!!!!!!
First few chapters Tricia says she barely knows her husband.
Now in the last chapters she suddenly reveals she's obsessed with him and actually set up their whole relationship with all her prior knowledge.
I mean I know author wants us to be oblivious of the plot twist but this just makes me reader look stupid.
Really messy. I wish it was written more wisely.
