I loved that this one had so many unique and challenging situations. There were unexpected dishes that the customers asked for, but then when you find out why it is so sweet. We see the layers of these characters in just a few minutes when we start investigating the foods that are special to them. If you like books with investigations and layered characters, read this one.
I love the way this series walks the line between science and cryptids. Part of the answer to the mystery seemed obvious early on and it took Morgan a while to get that part. I was completely stumped about the other part of the answer to the mystery. I was pleasantly surprised with that answer. The romance between Morgan and Jon developed nicely. We did not see much of Devon or Rita. That didn't bother me much, but it might annoy some. Charlie was a little suspicious throughout the book and Ryan did a good job making me go back and forth about her.
This was a great book 2. It convinced me that this is an awesome series.
The 80s vibes are strong in this book! It really helps immerse you in the setting. I loved seeing Lydia succeeding with her cafe. Seeing Madame and her family was an unexpected delight. I so enjoy Lydia, her family, and the setting.
The mystery and the investigation were good. Lydia and Grandma Mary make a great sleuthing duo. The romance is developing nicely. It is just awesome.
I am so glad we got time with the crow! From the description, we know that there probably won't be a lot with the crows, but we do get some really good crow scenes. The unraveling or partial unraveling of Razel's plan was surprising and emotional. Thia becomes stronger in more than one way and I did like that. We are left at a good spot. It makes you want to go to the next book immediately. The romance subverts some tropes in a good way, but I don't love it. I am curious to see how the romance develops in the next one.
The beginning was slow, but I kept at it because so many people told me they enjoyed it. I'm glad I did. There weren't really any mysteries because it seemed obvious what was going on, which surprised me. The strength of the book is the creeping horror and the body horror. I did enjoy seeing them investigate what was going on and their discoveries. I'm glad I stuck with it and it was a good book to usher me into my 2024 reading goals of reading slower.
I loved this from the beginning! We know that the Team Leader is the only one to come back, so we have expectations right off the bat. Some of those come to pass and some don't. So that suspense of how our expectations will turn out was enjoyable.
I loved the way that the Aurora was reminiscent of the Titanic. That also got our expectations going as well. The gore was so well done. I never saw the twist coming either. This was so much better than I expected!
I was rooting so hard for Lyndsay and the Murray's to solve this one! I loved seeing the festival that they have been talking about! The mystery was very well done and pulled hard on my heartstrings. The investigation was a bit unreasonable, but it was a good development considering the previous two books. The romance has been creeping along, but I liked it because it had a touch of realism that I liked. I figured out who did it and why pretty early on, but I wanted to see justice done, so figuring it out early didn't ruin my enjoyment.
There are lots of upcoming events like the kickboxing tournament that I want to see! So I can't wait to see what is next.
It took me a little while to warm up to Flora, but I did start on book 4. Other than taking a few pages to figure out who everyone is and getting to know Flora, there wasn't any problem starting on book 4. I loved the island, as well as Isla and Konstantin's romance. I liked how Konstantin was able to contribute to Christmas. The reveal of who he was seemed reasonable and I liked how people reacted to it as well.
Some of the writing was a bit overdone. The podcast is an interesting addition, but on the audiobook, it isn't a great podcast. The mysteries that she is uncovering are horrific and the author does a good job making us feel the horror of it. I have to admit some parts were hard to listen to and I skipped them. I figure that makes for a good thriller mystery.
I started this a while back and put it down because it wasn't the right time, but I could t stop thinking about it. So I picked it up again. I liked that the horror was related to an obsession with beauty, bodies, and organic ingredients. The body horror and capitalism to an extreme were really well done. Some of the sexual stuff was weird and didn't add anything to the story to me. The ending visuals of the narrator will stay with me. I'm glad I came back to this one.
Wow! I never saw that twist coming. It really made me stop and think about the crimes and ramifications of the crimes. The author did an amazing job portraying the complex nature of MMIW cases. It isn't one quick and easy answer. There are multiple different answers and ways to get to those answers. The mystery is great, the characters are complex, and the cultural representation is subtle and powerful.
Just wow!
I liked the multimedia parts of the book. I liked the princess and animal hybrids. The author did a great job making us feel like we were in the head of a programmed ‘person'. We got to see so many different parts of the Kingdom and I liked that too. I was so shocked to see how it all worked out. That option was not on my radar. I do think that some of the side characters that were in the ending had not been developed well enough for me to truly care about what they did in the end. I am also unsure if this is the only one or if there is another coming in this setting. I would definitely read it!
