Prentiss Lake

Hot take, but I feel this book is a bit overrated. I had heard that people sobbed over the pages and that got me so excited. But alas, I did not feel so deeply for our heroes. Honestly I felt more for Thetis and her character development. I wonder what that says about me as a reader? I guess I was left unfulfilled because I wanted more from their reunion. 2 1/2 stars for making me feel depressed.

I love to see the struggles during their first winter, felt it was really refreshing. And something she AMC show completely shrimped out on. And seeing the group evolve relatively quickly picking up people, losing others, changing their set up. Kirkman is doing a lot of realistic storytelling here. He brings the cold hard truth to an otherwise silly genre. And I'm totally in love with it.

I did the unfortunate thing of reading this during the Covid-19 pandemic. And boy was that a choice. I was already feeling quite claustrophobic just from quarantine, but this book did well to amplify that feeling tenfold. If you like unsettling and creepy feelings of paranoia, this book is for you. Danielewski does a fantastic job with spacial awareness in this one. And he gets very psychological with it too. I felt as though I was going crazy reading this manuscript too. Felt like I was right beside the characters within the book. Its delicious. And I was and am obsessed.

Now, I've not read the Odyssey since middle school probably. But one of my friends shared with me this EP called Epic: Official Concept Album and I couldn't fly to my bookshelf fast enough after listening to it. I hadn't remembered the story was so emotional and sad. I suppose looking at this classic through the lens of one who has grieved is different than a kid trying to pass their midterm English exam. Anyway, refreshing myself with Homer's epic was everything I wanted. An adventure that will reside in my head forever, rent free.
