I must confess: I feel bad for these 3 stars. I wish I could give it a higher rating but unfortunately I can't. Here's why:
The synopsis promised an action packed story full of suspense and mystery. Instead, I got a very very slow pace. Nothing really interesting happens and it only gets better in the last fifty pages.
Now about the characters. They were funny and broken at the same time, with a pleasant dynamic. I absolutely loved the crafted way they were written and you really could feel empathy for them. However, the weird part was the romance. I mean, it was kind of obvious but I still couldn't process it.
Something I do applaud is the deep investigation about Columbus. I learnt a lot about some historical facts, so it was like reading a history textbook but more entertaining.
I'm wondering about the ending because I feel like this is going to be a series. If it's so, I'm curious to see the development in the next book.
Me at the middle of the book:
Go, Chris! GO!!!! You can win this! Just have a little faith and everything will be fine!
Me at the last pages of Hurt:
I really want to finish this book.
No I don't.
I want to know how Chris is going to resolve all of this stuff.
Yeah, but then the story will end and you will want to read more books of Chris and there are none
Me closing the book:
... ... ... ... I was right. I need more books of Chris Buckley!
PS: I love this series. Even when I still have questions and I'm dreaming of reading a book where Chris and Brandon -from The Books of Marvella- meet and talk about evil in small towns.
This is story is good. Really good. But honestly is not for me. I wish I could say I enjoyed it but I cannot lie, specially when it took me too long to read it. Maybe I'll be reading another Karen Kingsbury book in the future but I'll make sure I like the plot first and not buy it just because it was five dollars in Barnes and Noble.
I've been spoiled so I knew the ending, but STILL I definitely wasn't prepared for that!! I couldn't help myself to compare this book with The Books of Marvella but they are totally different. Solitary is darker and creepier, but also deep and meaningful. I'm really curious to see how this is going to resolve.
Ok, I'm trying to put my thoughts in order because I'm quite confused...
The characters background made me lose the interest and made me wish to stop reading, but the story became captivating in some parts, so I guess is fifty fifty.
Although I always love and enjoy stories about forgiveness, I didn't like this book because I can't believe that someone can be forgiven after committing suicide. I'm truly sorry but I can't be so open minded about this.
I received a book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review and that's what I did.
I was carefully thinking how could I say that I really hated this book without being rude or offensive... And I've become to the conclusion that is better not to say a word since I can't find anything positive to say.
I won this book through GoodReads and I thank to the publisher for providing me this copy but this fact didn't influence the review.
This is definitely one of my favorite memoirs books! This book is deep, touching and full of good message. I'm amazed of the big change in Mark Bouman's life and how he could become a man of example even with his tragic past. It was really deep to read about his journey to forgiveness and restoration. I can't describe how amazing is this memoir! I recommend this book if you want to read something about redemption and forgiveness.
Sometimes I think I'm too optimistic when it's about books. I believe that a slow beginning is not an obstacle to keep me reading until the end... Well, it seems that this book is the exception.
If this book were a body, it'd be a body without a head, arms and legs. You never know where the story starts, where is the climax or how the heck you get to the end. So, I did a list of the things I didn't like of this dismembered body:
-The bold, italic, and underlined text made the narrative weird. -The story has so many points of view that you never fully understand who is the narrator. -There is no reason to keep reading. There are just pages and pages full of words without any sense. -Is this an adult, young adult or a whatever book? -There are no twists in the story.
In conclusion: I don't recommend this book. Seriously, go ahead and buy another one!

In any story, I like to have diverse POV, so bad characters are always worthy to read. In this book, however, the killer is empty and boring; although I think that his motivation was interesting and had a philosophical side.
The story doesn't give a reason to keep reading, and if you read the first chapters and then skip right to the final chapter, you won't miss anything.

I read the description and thought: This is the kind of fantasy I like, so I'm sure I'm going to love this book.
But then, after 200 pages I wasn't amazed.
The world is utterly amazing. I imagined myself jumping like a happy rabbit, devouring with my eyes everything around and just enjoying the place. So I couldn't understand why Molly was more focus on looking at Dev instead of asking important questions. And talking about Molly, I really didn't like her. She was thinking of sex most all the time and that was very boring.
So, 80% of the book was a slow slow reading.
And then, the amazing chapter 23 came to save the day! From there, the story became adictive and I couldn't take my eyes off the book. The explanation of the world, how everything worked and the reason why Molly could travel there was surprising and delightful.
Of course, the ending was a complete shock because this is going to continue in the next book, so we'll see what happens!

A nice, sweet, sometimes-full-of-guilty, but hopeful story.
This is the kind of romance that I like: Slowly developed with a great dosis of reality. I always heard of Irene Hannon' books but now that I've read this book, I have to say: I'm amused. Her writing is gorgeous and her stories are full of drama, so I totally recommend this one.
