Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest, this novel perfectly captures the spirit of the Puget Sound. The story made me think about what it is to be a woman, a daughter, and someday a mother. I am eager to see what this author writes next!
Once again, I'm having the time of my life. Also sobbing my eyes out. And laughing. And sobbing again. Is it the best writing? Or the best plot? No. Am I having an immensely good time (aside from all the emotional breakdowns I've had)? Yes. And tbh, I don't care about anything else. Enjoyment factor is a 5/5 for me.
I wish there was more!!!! the world building in this story was so good and vivid, can't wait to read the locked tomb series!
There are certainly some antiquated parts of this collection that I would have preferred to see updated or simply ommited (ie the racist language in some of the stories), but overall a very interesting take on the detective story.
I began my year with Legends and Lattes so it seems only fitting that I end it with Bookshops and Bonedust. These novels are truly like sipping hot cocoa from my favorite mug whilst curled on my favorite seat on the couch under the softest blanket in the house. The vibes are impeccable
Such a cool take on the sci-fi fantasy genre! I was worried about the time travel aspect but McCaffery did an incredibly good job with it. Overall a delightful read.
Lovely (despite there not being any zombies)
For some reason I thought there were zombies in this book...no zombies but still quite good!!! Highly recommend this short yet engaging read.
Fun and whimsical D&D inspired feel-good coffee shop novel!!! I really enjoyed the quick light-hearted read and would def recommend to anyone who enjoys cute fluff and a side of D&D style fantasy (also coffee...the cozy coffee shop vibes are incredible in this book).
P.S. If you enjoy role-playing games and whimsical vibey novels, I highly recommend Green Glass House by Kate Milford!!!
Jordan Baker has always been my favorite character in the Great Gatsby and this retelling from her perspective was quite literally magical. The writing emulates the original so well while also adding something new. Also Jordan Baker and Nick are canonicaly queer
Liked the concept
Love the characters and that it didn't stretch much longer than it needed to (unlike some books that unnecessarily become trilogies...) I really enjoyed the universe and thought the concept was interesting. Plot was def quite easy to predict (not always a bad thing, but at times the foreshadowing felt a little...heavy handed). Overall a fun read.
I initially absolutely hated this book. And while I vehemently hate Nick, Daisy, and pretty much everyone else in this story right along with F. Scott Fitzgerald, I somehow still love this book. Whether it was Jordan Baker (my wife
Ok finish to an ok series
I'm gonna be honest, the only reason I finished the series was because it was a queer fantasy...didn't particularly mind it, definitely a tad slow and sometimes a little longer than necessary. I appreciate the author's intent and the message of healing. It satisfied what I needed in my reading for the moment.
SUPER!
okay, bad pun aside, I loved this finale. the whole story feels very cinematic and I absolutely adore nova and adrian. a satisfying ending to a fun series.
The first Asimov book I read was Foundation and in hindsight it was a bad introduction to him for someone like me who is not overly interested in extremely hard-core sci-fi that reads like a dry and crumbly textbook. This book was so much more entertaining and had a surprisingly beautiful overarching message (and yes, I am a sucker for robots and murder mystery which is even better when combined). Overall it was such a romp that I am hoping the other books in the Robot Novels are just as fun!
A bit predictable, but still good
Tbh, a lot of traveling...good enough though. I've heard the second book is better so excited for that!!! Characters were interesting and the hint of romance is fun
I often find myself thinking that classics are overrated and this was one of those instances where maybe I was too tired while reading it to see the greater epiphany, but ultimately felt that the whole story was a bit heavy handed and quite frankly not as poignant or original as it had been made out to be for me by literally everyone. Yes, I do understand now exactly what people mean when they say something is “orwellian” or Big Brother, but also my life and thought process has not been dramatically changed (or even like a teensy tiny, maybe I was just already disillusioned about humanity and politics or I am a much dumber reader than I thought lol).
Spoiler (sort of)
I did not expect the romance or the ~sex~ scenes, so uh points for surprising me Orwell??
final thoughts:
lowkey the book feels completely and utterly permeated by old white guy
Such a fun take on the classic superhero story! Love me some found family and also the tension between Eli and Victor...they should get a room. Anyways, can't wait for more awesome books by V.E. Schwab
SO SO GLAD I PICKED THIS ONE UP!!! I read the first one a couple of years ago and then never got around to the second one but boy am I glad I did. Love both our main characters (even if I was screaming at Adrian to just get a recording in that one scene because that would have literally solved the whole oh, they would never believe me issue...) and their romance is so cute. Highly recommend this and Marissa Meyer's other series, The Lunar Chronicles.
I picked this book up mostly on a whim and because the cover looked intriguing and someone at the bookstore had left a little blurb saying it was queer (which I absolutely loved how matter of fact the queerness was, I appreciate a good story about queerness prevailing in the face of odds like Simon vs the Homosapiens Agenda, but I also just want more normal representation showing queer people just being people and respected as such and this book did an amazing job of that!). It sat on my shelf for two years which is really a shame because I devoured it in 3 days and it's quickly become one of my favorite reads of the year.
Don't let the mixed reviews keep you from reading it (I was at first nervous because there were some less than enthusiastic reviews, but I think that mostly comes down to taste).
I would recommend this for people who enjoy casual queer representation, accurate sibling relationships (boy did Kylee's sense of protecting her brother resonate with me as an older sister myself), and a refreshing new fantasy world (seriously I would love to have a Lonely Planet guide for this world it's so cool and I can't wait for it to be unpacked more in the sequels!)
Hope you enjoy this book as much as I did! (or don't that's really up to you
And that's economics....
I have never felt more seen in a novel.
I'm autistic myself and have been so starved of representation, especially of autistic women, and boy did this book deliver. Highly recommend as a sweet, funny, and downright heartwrenching read!!!
Such a cozy vibe. I particularly enjoyed the focus on the community (yes a staple of murder mysteries, but it felt more personal in this novel) and the intimacy of the main friend group. Overall a perfect vacation read (or curled up on the couch in early autumn).
As a theater kid myself this was both a familiar story (the sense of family between a cast, passion, roles mixing with reality) and at the same time completely and utterly darker and twisted than anything that would happen in my theater (we do not go about murdering each other on the regular). Beautiful writing and as a Shakespeare adorer myself, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Can't wait for more by M.L. Rio
I have read very few books where I have afterwards thought this not only changed my life as a reader and enjoyer of stories (both serious and absurdly hilarious) but also as a thinker and horribly flawed human being. One person alone is nothing, two people are a nation. As someone who so often feels alone this novel was so powerful and in many ways (perhaps in the simplest, most human of ways) profound. It's so incredibly easy to forget that we are all the same people, that we sailed all the way across the sea until we came back. But we are a Nation. And we have incredible potential for thought, creativity, and community.
All this to say, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
