Beautifully written and heartbreaking. A stark example of all the things that conservatives/fascists are doing now are the same things that Communism did in the past: control over women's bodies, asking friends and family to spy on each other, hoarding wealth, etc. And yet democratic socialism is the enemy...hmmmm.
I think a lot of tweens will like this book but it's not necessarily for me. I liked the world building but the writing was a bit too cloying for me? Also, I couldn't quite figure out the audience: some of the characters would fit in well in established middle grade but Scarlett is pretty violet and in one scene there's bit about people being skinned and their skins turned into flags hanging outside a city. Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age but that seems like a lot for children's/middle grade.
But if you like adventure stories with competent bank robbers and silly language, this is for you!
This was a great thriller! Perfect for fans of true crime - and who like interrogating their fascination with true crime - and writers like Mindy McGinnis. This is also a great YA/Adult crossover book for older teens.
Interesting but not essential. Perhaps if I were Canadian this would have more appeal but still a good listen.
Gorgeous, heartbreaking, and sometimes even funny. A great memoir of being a child and an undocumented immigrant.
This book is not good but extra an extra star for all the Prof X and Captain Picard comparisons.
This was great! If you're looking for something that's southern gothic horror/dark academia then this is for you. Also, if you are a Ronan/Kavinsky shipper from the Raven Boys series this will tick a lot of those boxes: violence, cars, Longmont, bad decisions, etc..
I really enjoyed this - a perfect spooky October read! I do wonder about some of the ways Mari's addictions and anxieties were portrayed but on the whole this was GREAT!
Beautiful, devastating, and somehow ultimately hopeful. All the characters were so perfectly created and I loved them all. I will fight anyone who hurts Katrina Nguyen!
Also, you MUST listen to the Bartok sonata at the end. It's absolutely essential to the understanding of the book.
I think one of the best books I've read this year and I'm going to be hounding everyone to read it.
I really liked this and it was a nice break from the last books I read which were good but pretty dark and upsetting. I do love a magical mystery and a magical mystery with a romance between a nerd and a jock?! Perfect.
I liked this book and I realize that the scope was relatively narrow in that it really focused on Elizabeth Packard's experience of a somewhat forgotten progressive and political force. I do wish the author had been more clear that the advances she made for women's rights were great but also relatively narrowly focused on white, straight, cis, able-bodied, and middle-class women. The postscript does say that some of these issues are still plaguing women today and using suffragettes and Nancy Pelosi as examples. But still, it's missing the plight of a lot of actually mentally ill women, women of color, non-Christian women, and not middle-class women. Just something to keep in mind.
Fantastic! I loved how I could have been happy either way whether or not Mandy got super powers . The book is about becoming who you are meant to be, no matter how difficult. Plus the art is A+!
This is maybe my favorite one so far. I'm glad Charlie gets help and it's so sweet to see jock and Charlie's relationship mature.
Also, love the mini comic about the teachers and Tao's Instagram posts were the best!
While I didn't like this quite as much as Elatsoe, this was still great! I really loved the sections with Oli and the Reflecting World. Silent Ami was also a favorite.
This is a great pick for anyone who wants a twist on a portal fantasy!
Reading this was a very powerful experience and I'm glad that I took a couple of weeks to read through it at my lunches at work.
I am in awe of Kaba's humility, generosity, and hopefulness around prison industrial complex abolition. Her words have given me a lot to think about like the fact that police don't prevent or solve (most) crimes, that punishment isn't necessarily justice, that thinking about these issues is a process, that we are only limited by our imagination of what a future without prisons and police would look like. It also made me think a lot about being in a position to do surveillance and have power over teens at work.
Finally, if you're a true crime fan, as I am, I definitely recommend you check this out as a way to think about crime, punishment, and what justice actually could be.
This was a cute start to a graphic novel series! Definitely a good pick for the Wings of Fire crowd!
Another winner as usual. For some reason I've read this “out of order” but it doesn't super matter. I know the side characters have their own books that I can go back to, but this was just perfect for right now. Sexy and sweet with some relatable characters dealing with anxiety and family issues.
So good! The art is incredible and the story is riveting. Also: CATS.

I thought this was really interesting and a good reminder that unethical science is bad for a multitude of reasons!
I listened to it on audio and there were some occasions when Kean plugs his own podcast - which is fine?! - but it was unclear while listening if those were footnotes or in the text itself. In the text itself that seems weird but maybe there was no other way to express those notes in the audio version. It just threw off the groove a bit.
This is so sweet and heartfelt while also being hilarious. I enjoyed learning more about Wuhan than just COVID!
I liked the art in this and was intrigued by the haunted house story. The giant ghost-mech reveal at the end didn't work for me (surprising!) but still an enjoyable horror comic.
I enjoyed this - the world building and writing was beautiful - but wanted the plot to come together a little quicker. Or just maybe not be a series starter which I assume it will be.
Utter perfection. The way the characters deal with young adulthood (the 20s kind not the teen kind) and each other is beautiful. Those last pages really got me. Just a favorite.
