read the whole thing in one day. first thing off the bat, you can tell this was drawn in 2016-2017 (even without looking at the copyright page) by the artstyle alone. not a diss at the artstyle btw, i like how it evolves as the chapters go on. personally i will say the artstyle and a majority of the character design isn't my cup of tea, but i do like the background art/environments and the line weights.
if i had read this comic as a teen, as the issues were being released, i probably would've found it cute and perhaps hilarious, but as someone in their late 20s who experienced tumblr in its peak years, it kinda feels like a time capsule of the culture that was so prominent on that site (and a few others) at the time. doesn't really do anything for me now that i've matured past the mentalities exhibited by jonesy and a few other characters.
speaking of, the premise of this comic is unsettling when you think about it (impulsive teen girl discovers she has love-based mind altering powers and uses them on unsuspecting (and sometimes nonconsenting!) people in order to get her way). i'm glad jonesy's powers have the limits they do, and that they don't always work the way she intends them into, forcing her to deal with the consequences they entail. i'm surprised there were (seemingly) no callouts towards the creator for this aspect of jonesy. (i haven't really delved into their socials/online history and have no intentions to)
i did enjoy the city arc however! love the social activism aspect, and the new characters are pretty rad.
the ending was pretty meh for me, seems like jonesy didn't completely learn her lesson and avoided taking full accountability for her actions. not a fan of the way susan dismissed farid's COMPLETELY JUSTIFIED AND UNDERSTANDABLE anger at jonesy manipulating him with her powers. i feel like more should have happened for farid to forgive her.
overall, not much to write home about this comic. i rate it 6/10. art is a hit or miss, has an interesting premise but i feel like the writers fumbled it somehow. i will say, however, that if jonesy had used her powers like she did at the very end of the comic, we would've gotten a completely different story lmao
another book to donate to the local little free library! lol
misc. notes:
- stuff was......... not it. jonesy honey i'm sorry but you have bad taste in popstars LOL
- the subplot with the principal surprisingly went nowhere. all that buildup (and by all i mean not enough) for nothing
