Gave up 75 pages in. I enjoyed the writing but found the contents to be overbearing and shallow, the jokes far too slapstick. On the whole quite a heavy reading experience with regards to it's value
I do not particularly like this series. It starts off very funny and I often lol, but in reality it doesn't hold my attention because so much of it is a setup to a joke
While I am tempted to review this book as overwritten and unjustly uninteresting, which I found it to be, I feel that that would do this book a disservice, a dismissal on shallow grounds which ignores the real injustice in this reading experience, which is basically twofold. The point of this book seems to have been that it is dangerous to shrowd naivety and impulse in an ironic veil of coolness, and constantly demonstrates that by being what it criticises. To understand this I made my way through 1088 pages (including endnotes) of prose and humour which I didn't enjoy. So both the journey and the destination disappointed me. But the real problem I had with this book overall is it's justification and championing of selfish behaviour
The first thing of note is the prose. Unbelievable writing. A point that this books proves again and again is that eloquence is simply using the most appropriate language. Distractions and complications are the enemy of clarity. Language must be allowed to be spoken.
Having just finished this book, my mind cannot help but be drawn to the book's moral; it's ending. I have no problems with this book ending happily, but the arc thag Darcy underwent conflicts with my world view so as to make him a faulty character in my mind. I think he would not have been the person he is in the book in the real world, but instead a much more emotionally stunted and insecure man who would not have made good on the lessons he was taught buy instead would have lashed back at the teacher, as if to punish.
Beautifully written, with an unexpected story arc which which was much more about the boy than the pony.
I found the logic inconsistent, and often times the prose poor. The ideas work for me.
