Really didn't like this one. Everyone was super willing to accept outside people entire series. But now, completely reject the most useful woman to date? Major medical breakthroughs and saving people.
And the whole hero being “insane” has as much meaning as declaring he is “plaid”. Acts like everyone else and same after “cured”. Only insanity is no one connecting vanished for years and then destroying facilities known for keeping vampires. No one put that together...and declared victim insane. Whole book is frustrating inconsistencies.
Makes me want to go visit New York again! Fun and really unique story and unique characters. Really liked the True to New York solution to problem solving. Some set ups that I wanted to see in action (Queen's ability especially) just were forgotten.
I was expecting cute little romances, but disappointed.
1) Fun meet-cute and characters - good short story
2) 10% fun inspiration by Christmas Carol. 90% repeatedly and endlessly dwelling on regrets 12 years earlier.
3) Woman has clothes ripped off and set up to be ogled in bath. Came off creepy.
4) Best of them. Neat setting and fun dinner.
Fits well within main novel and gave some great background and fleshed out background characters.
Read it with 10 year old and had to explain somethings that have changed (walking to gate, Playboy magazine, 12 year riding buses alone in New York city). Sweet book to introduce body and friend changes. We found friends more discussion worthy than puberty.
I am only a few chapters in and giggling so hard I need to blow my nose. Funny and interesting and keeping me up.
I was expecting a simple Us vs Them book with the simple cliche characters (Good and moral sheriff, misunderstood mutants). Even the expected character tropes were much more nuanced and complicated than I expected and I really enjoyed the book. The characters stayed true to their natures too.
I received this book from a Goodreads raffle.
Cheeky fun
I read this in the proper way (lots of bookmarks). The euphemisms matched each plotline setting and were suitably goofy: rubbing the genie lamp, polishing moonstones, and even a page devoted to postman related. There were mysteries driving each plot and even with the number of decisions to cover, there were still surprises.
I listened to the audio production by the BBC and it was really fun and well acted. There were some parts at the beginning not well edited that I could not hear the voices under the sound effects but that was mild. Would recommend listening to this for the sound effect and voice humor enhancing Adams' wit.
Amazing characters that are messy, complicated, actually change opinions depending on what happened. World is detailed and interesting.
Recommend the audiobook so you can hear the words and chants.
The puns and word play kept me laughing in the car (to the bemusement of the dog passengers).
I see why this popped up on so many lists at the same time. Short, different and memorable.
Amazing shorts about women who should be household names. A great resource for students so they don't write biographies about the same few people (Ruby Bridges is an amazing woman, just can't continue to be the only name they offer every single year).
I really expected to like this book, but wasn't prepared for the dark parts in the middle so that may have colored my reading. The novel approach of having the dog, Enzo, narrate his own story and use his environment and experiences with his racing owner really worked for me. It was “believable” because it did only use his own experience and understanding of what was going on. The owner goes through some very rough experiences and the dog comments and supports his family to the best of his abilities. If I had been ready for some of the trials, I probably would have enjoyed it more, but I would definitely read more by this author.
Two disclaimers: I have not read the first book and received this as a much anticipated Tor release.
Initially I was a bit put off by the size of the book but the author packs more in by the phrasing and what us implied than others can manage in a whole 300+ page novel. I love the strained love and expectations. I am going to find the first book now.
I haven't read Xanth for a long time, but remember the adolescent humor and lighthearted pun filled stories. This reads like a fanfic of Piers Anthony.
I don't usually read these but everyone talking about the show. I didn't like any characters (part of why don't usually read these) but liked the twists in the plot. The end was very much like the credits in Wild Things.
I registered a book at BookCrossing.com!

I don't read many pet books because they all start and end the same way due to natural life span differences. This was a unique view of the relationship with a elderly dachshund and her lonely, isolated, alcoholic owner. He interprets her decline through his active denial, writing skills, and dreams. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.
I'd heard of the Future Library (real) and this was horrifying in all the ways government is horrible. Very unique and still uplifting.
Couldn't finish it and dropped it quickly. Sister died due to a priest's lust and the main isa priest also with uncontrolled lust in the same novel. In alternating sections just to really ratchet up the ick factor.
Not what I expected at all. Very well thought out evolution pathways and realistic time jump experience.
