Dark comic about surviving end times. I liked the stories, but very short - too short for me to really enjoy the story over all. Art is harsh, stark black and white and appropriate.
Found footage is difficult to pull off with a good plot and characters but this does it very well!! Engaging and kept me guessing.
After thinking more I don't think it could have ended and differently. Kelsey had to give up her whole life and history for the Better Life. This way, we could truly feel and understand the loss and pain. If had just been written for us and not experienced with the character it would have lacked emotional punch.
Prior review: A great story and didn't see ending coming - wasn't entirely satisfying because of this, but characters stayed true. Entertaining and very enjoyable.
Just came back and apparently missed a bunch of “cleaning up the characters “ Game of Thrones style. Since in mood for escapism glad. I do like how we revisit old romances as they grow and change too.
A great book to guide discussions and can read chapters in any order. I was able to tailor where my daughter is. The little cartoons reactions help normalize opposing reactions to material. Loss 1 star because desperately needs a copy editor for all the repetitive sentences. We'd giggle more at the bad sentences sometimes more than the material. But a very helpful guide covering internet, sex, babies, gender is complicated, and even consent.
An actual Anita Blake story like the ones from the beginning. Fighting supernatural bad guys, and I enjoyed the paranormal crime solving. The love interests were pared down (less than 20 in number), and not most if the book (why I stopped reading her stuff entirely). Even though the story was great, the new love interests are upsetting. The worst one is the 7 on 1 orgy with a non-consenting 16 year old. Apparently if they were all blacked out it makes it okay. And the boy will be shipped off to New Orleans when 17 to continue such an awful storyline.
Not for me. So dropping series again.
I received this book as a Goodreads prize.
This is about a character we all know. That broken, strange, one who thrives alone on the edge of the norma world in fantasy. The one that often is there to give a quest and nothing more. This is a story of a perfect, broken, strange girl named Auri and it of course is a perfect broken strange story. Spending a week with her isn't for everyone, but I loved this book.
I was listening to the audio book and could not skip to the end. Really good job with the alternating voices and how they changed through the story. Felt believable even though they were unpleasant characters. Ending does feel a bit of a let down, but it is true to the book's characters with the planning years ahead and picking priorities. We always hope karma willl play out but that isn't true.
I couldn't finish the book because I got so frustrated at all the times people acted inconsistently or knowledge appeared and vanished randomly to serve a plot.
POTENTIAL SPOILER:
A major villain has steadily tortured and killed members of powerful families. They have no problem finding him to order murder, but cannot find him for revenge. One family he reduced to a few members and follows the woman to finish the job. Instead of torturing her to find a book, he pauses strikes a deal to teach her son in the future. This is witnessed by an apparently upstanding man he brought along. Then he finishes murdering her.
This was one of many instances of inconsistencies in characters, motivation, and knowledge that I just couldn't go along with.
A clever idea to have a strong and assertive (and act strong not just claim she is while actions negate it like so many books) sorceress also as a politician. The book starts in the middle of her general story and makes reference to prior events (even though this is a first book) that helps to make the characters more real. Little lower score for some of the writing but I do plan to read more of her books.
Fun fairy tale
I always love the author's twists on traditional characters and this is no exception. I giggled out loud too for the elf veterinarian and tough goblin warband with a teddy bear and kitten. War scenes involved, so not for the younger fans.
Exceptional world building with unique characters that grow but stay true to themselves (bookish ones solve things with words not swords- a continuity issue that seems to elude some stories). All of this in a fun Western style world. I enjoyed it and can't wait for the final book.
This book was finally what I was hoping from the others. Characters not fully likable (not intended to be), but consistent with established personalities. There were complex dilemmas of genetic modification and discrimination that were interesting and there were no Simple Shiny Answers to all the problems. Satisfying ending overall.
Always a classic you will return to again and again! I return to read favorite passages frequently.
{Added when Kindle opened it}.
Most anthropomorphisms end up being too human or too alien for me. This one hit an excellent balance of bee-like behaviors but still enough ‘human' characteristics like curtsy and religion to make it accessible and understandable. This is a book following a bee through the natural life cycle of a hive and bee's life. Includes overcoming birth castes, foraging adventures, and politics of an aging divine ruler.
This Boy Fantasy didn't age well. Only woman in it jumps on the man minutes after meeting him and continues to initiate every few pages. Even apologized for being mad and sulking. Naked women constantly. The movie (and definitely TV series) had more plot and background.
A well deserved and wonderful end to the series. The characters remained believable and the ending true. Can't wait for the next set of books.
Avoids the skip-able filler common in so many books. Characters were interesting and varied and all the choices felt like a natural progression to the conclusion- not forced. I can't wait for the next book!
Used the Dracula daily and it was even better in many ways to reading it as originally written because it was sent on the day. Could feel passage of time.
Great idea - inconsistencies threw me out of the story. Basically if the Dr showed, it was to do something solely to move people through some random decisions. We have living, growing research subjects - we won't try to actually cure the disease with medication or even seeing if they can have self control. Let's teach them relevant things like calculus and mythology and see how their brains differ?! Lets burn the food in a funeral. And so on.
The whole idea of the brain fungus and how it worked was fun.
