Great book!! It's long, 960 pages, but worth every page. A very short and over-simplified review:
Post-apocalyptic horror and some fantasy. USA and Russia bomb each other with nuclear weapons, killing most of the population, throwing world into nuclear winter, destroying food sources and contaminating the water supply. Most survivors are left sick and/or deformed. The author, McCammon, is attentive to the characters, following the travels of each. We have "good guys" and "bad guys", so there is the battle between good and evil. All of the characters are well developed; you get to know them and they draw you into the story.
The main characters - "good guys" are:
Sue Wanda (Swan) - a girl who has the power to make plants grow.
Josh - a wrestler who happens to be in the same gas station as Swan when the nuclear weapons strike.
Sister Creep (Sister) - a bag lady living on the streets in New York. She obtains a glass ring that becomes important.
The main main characters - "bad guys: are:
Colonel Macklin - Former Air Force and POW.
Roland Croninger - a teenager who learns from Colonel Macklin.
The Man with the Scarlet Eye - evil character with demonic powers and capable of manipulation, shape shifting, mind control, etc. He is especially interested in tracking down Sister Creep for the glass ring, and Swan, because they represent hope and he doesn't want the world to have hope.
And there is so much more to the story! It's an excellent book!
